Questions about Kiddo and/or our adoption policy should be sent to socorescue8gmail; please do not call the rescue's number.*** Her foster mom writes: She needs time to decompress from living at the rescue but she is smart and picking up on the routine. Not completely house trained but no accidents in past 2 days. She loves playing, going for walks (good on the leash too) and cuddle time. Kiddo is adorable with short legs and a long body and has the dachshund personality: spunky, curious, devoted, protective. Whenever we go out, she wants to go with us and does great in the car. If we are on the couch, she is right there, can be a couch potato but also gets the zooms. She lets you know when anyone walks in the house. (I told the kids they won't be able to sneak out now that she's here-LOL.). When she was in GA, Kiddo was the staff favorite! She is so sweet. She is outgoing and loves attention. In GA she enjoyed playing with her friend Kasey but out of the shelter she doesn't seem to be as dog friendly. It could be that she just needs to decompress but we just want to play it on the safe side & say no other dogs and she would be happy with that. She just wants her human to love her! Kiddo's former owner left her and her siblings at a local pet store during an adoption event with a "Free Puppies" sign attached to their crate. While the owner never returned to pick up the pups at the end of the day, he did leave information about the puppies on a flyer, which listed their date of birth and that they were Dachshund/Lab mix. The staff of the pet store struggled with the thought of having to simply leave the pups outside their store, but didn't have any other option. Luckily for the pups, Scott Bennett, President and CEO of SoCo Rescue, was shopping at the pet store just before they were scheduled to close for the day. Upon hearing of the pup's, Scott offered to take the pups to SoCo Rescue. Kiddo's siblings immediately caught the plane to New Jersey. Not enough room for Kiddo so she has waited a while for her chance. Despite living at our rescue for an extended time, Kiddo has remained very affectionate and playful. She is now ready for her forever true home! Kiddo has been spayed and kept up to date on all of her vaccines, de-wormings and preventative care. Her recent heartworm test came back negative and she appears to be a very healthy dog. She will most likely require additional house and other basic training.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
