E!!!! Name: Pennie Best Guess for Breed: Retriever and hound mix Best Guess for Age: 4.5 years as of May 2025 Gender: Female Approximate Weight: 42 lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen her with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living At: DC area boarding partner - needs a foster home! What Pennie Is Like: Pennie is in boarding and has been taken out multiple times by the same volunteers, who love her. This is what they say about her: "Today, my husband and I had the privilege of spending a few hours with Pennie, a sweet and affectionate pup who’s looking for her forever home. She’s the kind of dog who would thrive in most households—not because she blends into the background, but because she truly wants to be part of the action. Pennie isn’t a couch potato; she’s happiest when she’s out discovering, playing, or going for a walk. I’d even say she’d make a great companion for a runner. During the car ride, she sat comfortably in my arms and even enjoyed sticking her head out the window, soaking in the breeze.nWe brought her to our home first. After checking things out, we took her on a walk. We stopped in at the neighborhood pet store. She was calm and curious, sniffing around and graciously accepting a treat. When we got back, she ran around the yard at her own pace exploring every corner. When it was time to go indoors, she followed our lead easily and continued her little adventure indoors. It was clear she enjoyed the attention and affection we gave her—she’d come when called and loved being loved on. Once she settled, she entertained herself with a couple of stuffies we had out. I tried coaxing her onto the couch for a nap, but she wouldn’t go for it. My guess is that in her previous life, she may not have been allowed on furniture—but that’s something that could shift with time and trust. On the next visit, we took her on the same routine and she was much more relaxed and you could tell being herself. In the house she went right for the toys this time, treats, water, and cruising around. She is very curious and we noticed very visual compared to our last dog. She saw herself in the tv, she watched tv when it's on, and she saw pics of our last dog on the shelf and ran toward them like she wanted to greet him (that was special for us). That with the hound nose and she is one curious and in the moment pup and never got into trouble, or bit things or tore them, and she did respond to our cues even if not direct words - she knew what we meant. Pennie is a sweet, well-mannered dog who would thrive in a home where she’s not left behind, but included—whether that’s in daily walks, park outings, or just being part of a family’s rhythm. She’s gentle, curious, and adorable—and any home would be lucky to have her. Pennie is Looking For: Her forever family! This sweetie landed in the shelter through no fault of her own and she is eagerly looking forward to once again having her own humans. Sniffy walks (that hound nose!), all the adventures her family can dream up, quality kibble, and a cushy dog bed - yes, please! But at the top of her wish list - well, she's an experienced dog well out of the puppy yips and knows what's most important in life: Being safe and loved and under her own roof. Heartworm Information: Pennie is heartworm positive, but this Lucky Dog got extra lucky! This pup is part of a groundbreaking study we are conducting at our South Carolina Rescue Campus that has the potential to change the way shelters across the United States treat heartworm positive dogs. All dogs in the study are placed at random in either the 2 shot or 3 shot protocol with strictly monitored protocols in place. Four weeks following their final injection, the pups are eligible to transport to the DC area for placement in foster or adoptive care. After treatment concludes, we work with adopters to arrange a free follow up heartworm test after 6 months, followed by a second test at 9 months. Pennie has completed the treatment and activity restriction phase, and is awaiting her six-month follow up test. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
