er family! BUTTERNUT SQUASH NEEDS FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Butternut Squash and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (05/25) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Silver Spring, MD (12020 Cherry Hill Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20904)! Name: Butternut Squash Best Guess for Breed: Jack Russell/Cairn Terrier mix Best Guess for Age: 3 years as of May 2025 SEX: Male Approximate Weight: 20lbs Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen them with cats but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! We do not recommend him for a home with children under the age of 12. Currently Living at: DC area foster home See this cutie in this video! .youtube/shorts/aa2w9KVPb8g Butternut Squash is Looking For: His forever home! This sweetie is eagerly looking forward to having his own humans for sniffy walks and all the adventures they can dream up. And dog school so he can show how super smart he is. And then pets and cuddles and belly scritches at the end of a fun day together. And he'll want quality kibble and a cushy dog bed. Most of all, though, he wants to know he's safe and loved. In exchange he promises all the adoring gazes and happy tail wags he's storing up, and loyal companionship for all his days. What do you say? Is Butternut Squash the one you see by your side? What My Foster Says About Me: Overall, I am finding Butternut Squash to be a great houseguest. He's pretty independent and will play on his own with toys but also likes me to join in for games of fetch and tug-of-war. He loves taking walks and lazing away the day in the yard. He sleeps quietly in his crate has been respectful of my senior dog. He was more confident than I expected and had tolerance for (most) noises and cars. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption. That said, we cannot make any guarantees about age, breed or temperament. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
