n all vaccines and has enjoyed regular vet check-ups since puppyhood. She is trained and knows the basics of “sit,” “lay,” “paw,” and more, and she’s completely housebroken. Gracie adores kids (our own have grown up loving her), welcomes adults and other dogs with a happy tail wag, and makes instant friends at the dog park. Fetch, tug-of-war, and any game that involves a ball are her absolute favorites, and she never turns down a run around the yard. She loves to cuddle and of course she loves back and head rubs. Re-homing Gracie is a truly difficult decision for our family. Our oldest child was born with dog-dander allergy and requires daily medication. After nearly a year of deciding, we know the kindest choice—for both child and pup—is to find Gracie a new home where she’ll be just as cherished. She is pretty energetic, when outside she loves to run around chasing the ball etc...(even though she is 6, she still acts like a puppy sometimes) Currently she's left alone for 2-3 hours but when I worked outside the home she used to be by herself 6-8 hours. She never had any accidents at home and we do not put her in a crate. She also doesn't chew anything besides her own toys. She does well with other dogs and cats (as long as they are ok with her). She's not territorial and is very friendly (submissive). If she doesn't like something, she will just walk away. If you’re looking for a joyful, loyal companion, Gracie might be the perfect addition to your family. Please reach out—we’d love to introduce you. (Local adoptions preferred — Philadelphia and tri-state area [South Jersey and northern Delaware] only.) PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTACTING US! We are NOT a shelter: All of our dogs live in private homes with foster families. Come and meet the Almost Home dogs and their fosters at our Meet & Greet events, where you can learn more about our wonderful dogs from the people who live with them, find out which dogs are on their way and when they’ll arrive, and fill out an application to adopt or foster. We cannot adopt to homes where electric-shock fencing systems or training collars are used. For more information on the dangers of electric-shock collars, please visit banshockcollars.ca/studies.php . We do not have an online adoption application; to request an application, e-mail us at AlmostHome4Dogsyahoo. To speed e-mail processing time, be sure to note the name of the dog you are inquiring about in the Subject line. For Meet & Greet times and locations, visit our home page, where you also will find information on our adoption process and fees. FOSTER FAMILIES ARE LIFESAVERS!! Can you open your heart and home for a few weeks to homeless shelter dog? Remember, by fostering a dog, you save TWO lives — that of your foster dog, and that of the dog who takes his place in the shelter! Come to a Meet & Greet and find out if fostering is for you — there's no reward quite like the feeling that you've saved a life ... or two!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
