his dad‘s personal life, where he was not going to be home 12 to 14 hours at a time. for the time of his adoption, Blaze was the happiest boy you could imagine. He had that of his dreams, where he could snuggle in a chair with him, welcome him home from work, and even go to work with him most days at the greenhouse. But life changes. People change. Schedules have to change. and sadly, things happen for the dogs that no one is happy about. We are making the best of it for Blaze the best we can, but we really need to find him a home because nine-year-old boys who have been in a loving home do not need to be waiting forever. You would never guess that he is nine years old to look at him because he has lost weight and is very svelte and handsome. We updated his rabies shot, make sure he has heartworm negative, and we are getting him out for walks as often as we can. Please help us find him a home! From his original post 14 months ago: Blaze is a favorite with the volunteers and is gracious and affectionate with men and women, young and old, and boy, does he love kids! One volunteer said, “Blaze is my favorite to walk: He’s easy to leash and an absolute gentleman.” He tries to keep his kennel clean but that’s tough when he has to wait so long for a toilet break. But he’s a smart boy and with some patience and care, we feel sure he will ace housetraining! While Blaze is content to be an only dog, he has shown signs that he could live with other dogs: he shared walk time this week with Laney, a shy little hound, and they did well together. As with all our adoptions, we would recommend a meet and greet. Blaze has seen a vet and is in great health for a young senior. He is showing fewer issues with other dogs, now that he has been neutered and lost some much-needed weight, AND he is not nearly as reactive to the shelter mascot cat. We feel his adoptability has increased 10-fold thanks to his hormones no longer raging. Check out the videos to see how he is now responding to a lovely young dog-thing walking around with him! He is neutered, current with vaccines, and microchipped.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
