s I look like a Walter Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know that even though I look like a "Walter" - apparently I'm a "hoot and a half" - whatever that is? Mama Sarah says I have personality for days, and am one of the best behaved puppies she's ever let stay at her house! I only go potty outside, and I like to sleep in my fluffy bed in my kennel when asked to. I really enjoy running zoomies with complete abandon, the wind through my ears fuels me on! My foster brother, Auletes, and I play all the time! We play chase, tug, chew sharing, and WWE wrestling. Auletes is 4x my size, but that doesn't stop me from chasing him and tackling him. He's very gentle with me, but I still show him how tough I can be when we play! There are 4 other dogs that live here with Mama Sarah, they're all nice to me, but they're not interested in playing. They are teaching me "boundaries" like: not jumping on them, no wrestling on the couch, no playing bitey ears when we're out for a walk, and most importantly - personal space. I can be quite the snuggler, but I'm learning to respect personal bubbles. There's also, like, a bunch of cats that live here - some inside, some outside. I'm not really interested in them. When they run I play zoomie with them, but I don't actually want to catch them, just play. Mama Sarah says that's fine as long as I remember to be nice if they don't want to wrestle after zooming. I listen pretty good for a tiny pup (I'm only ~15# at 4 months old) who had no official training before getting here. I don't really know many commands yet, Mama Sarah says she likes to give young puppies who start out really shy time to build their confidence and play before going to "school" - she says I respond so well to my name it won't take me long to learn other English words. Maybe I'll ask her if I can start school this week like the human children are? Speaking of snuggling, we've just had dinner and some play time, so I'm going to run a short zoomie route from the dining room to the couch and land on Mama Sarah to let her know it's time for my evening nap. While I'm resting (recharging for the next round of zoomies, etc) it would be super cool if you shared my story so my Furever Family can find me! Thanks! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
