g: working on it/belly band • Fenced yard: preferred • Shared walls: no • People: all • Dogs: all • Other: special diet and health needs Overview Meet Dr. Frank-n-Furter, a charming 14-year-old brindle dachshund with a quirky personality and a heart full of love! This sweet 15-pound gentleman came to Little Paws when his previous family couldn’t manage his medical costs, but he’s ready to find a family who will love him just as he is. Frank is a very happy dog who aims to please and loves to be with his people. Despite being a senior, he still has that classic dachshund spirit and energy for short walks and playtime. He’s got a chatty personality and listens remarkably well for a dachshund—he’ll come when called and go to his bed or outside on command (except when it’s raining!). Environment Frank loves being outside but doesn’t necessarily need a large yard—a deck or patio where he can lounge in the sun would make him happy. If there is a yard, it should be fenced for his safety. He’s not a fan of long walks but enjoys short strolls and adventures. Frank will need a home without shared walls as he can be quite the chatty fellow! He’s comfortable in a pen and will settle down once you leave, though he may bark initially. He’s great in the car and immediately goes to sleep once he’s settled in. Pets & People Frank is absolutely wonderful with people of all ages. He’s friendly with everyone and loves meeting new people—he’s never met a stranger! He’s been around children, including a six-year-old, and does great with them. Frank gets along very well with other dogs and seems to enjoy being part of a pack, though he could be perfectly happy as an only dog too. He’s more interested in interacting with people than playing with other dogs, but he’s friendly with his canine companions. Frank is very food motivated and loves to eat—sometimes a little too much! He’ll snatch food from other dogs if given the chance and tends to eat everything off the ground, so he needs close supervision. Health Frank requires ongoing medical care that his future family should be prepared for. He has a history of bladder stones and will need to stay on Hill’s Prescription c/d food and treats for life—no other food or treats allowed. He also has skin allergies that require regular Cytopoint injections and potentially medicated baths if they flare up. Due to his bladder issues, he doesn’t always manage to hold it for outside. We’ve been using belly bands and he doesn’t mind wearing them! Location Dr. Frank-n-Furter is available for adoption from Arlington, VA. Please email stacyplittlepawsdr with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Dr. Frank-n-Furter is $250.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
