dium Size: large Color(s): black Description: ***Needs a Foster Home*** This dog is in need of a foster home as well as a permanent home. If you are interested in fostering please fill out an online application. Hi, I'm Luna, a loving, smart, sweet, happy, friendly, energetic, eager to please German Shepherd (65%) / Belgian Malinois (35%), yes, my DNA was done! Yipee… I’m looking for my forever home as I’m an owner-turn in. Nothing I did… allergy issues came into the mix of my life. I’m just an all-around great family dog and would love a home where someone is around most of the day and provide daily enrichment exercises for me like maybe tunnel, hoop, and I absolutely love FETCHING, boy oh boy, I could fetch all day even with distractions. Or you could even think outside the box and come up with something creative, maybe hiding treats, or dirty socks and I’ll try and find them, wouldn’t that be fun? I’m also thinking it may be cool to even have a submissive canine companion because I never have had one. I am told that I can be a little bit of an “alpha mama” and prefer male dogs over female dogs, and due to my size and relentless energy, small kids would not be good, but teens may be great and cats are off limits. I would like to sleep close to my family and not being separated like I was before, but be a real part of the family. I am well focused when playing, I walk quite well on a leash, and when I get excited, I may jump up but with a little training I could be at the top of my league. I look to my owner for direction whether we are walking, running, hiking, bike riding, you are my pack leader and I want to please. I have excellent recall, housebroken, crate trained, no food or toy aggression with this sweet girl, I alert you when I need to go potty if there is no doggie door, I ride like a champ in the car and love water as I stay calm when given a warm bubble bath. I know a few commands in both Spanish and English and my English commands are getting better daily. My family would have to understand my energetic breed and that I will be your best friend and a great companion. I hope people will NOT pass me by because I am a black dog. I am special, huggable, lovable, and just want love and want to give love. If you're interested in meeting me, please fill out an online application and come see me, I’m the pretty one with a beautiful soft, shiny black coat and pearly whites!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
