og mixes. He is the smaller of the two males, but has all the zest that you expect from a heeler. He is a sweet and smart boy who is looking for an active family who can keep up with his busy mind and body. Roo currently weighs about 9lbs, and we estimate he will be around 45lbs when fully grown. Roo came to us as part of a litter of puppies that were surrendered by their owners. The owners had two intact dogs, but didn't plan on having a litter of puppies. Mom is getting spayed, so no more puppies for her! The puppies have all been doing great in foster care and are looking for individual homes so they can get the one-on-one training they need. Roo is the sensitive sweetheart of the group. He can be a little shy in new situations, but thrives on love and tasty treats. He loves to play and explore, and can often be found wandering around the backyard looking for something to get into. He also has learned how to play fetch. He would love a family who can take him on lots of adventures and help him gain some more confidence. Roo is still learning all of his basic manners, so his new family will need to be dedicated to continuing his training and socialization to help him be the best boy he can be. Roo has done well with other dogs and could be a great active sibling for a pup who needs a wrestling buddy. Roo has been in a foster home with a cat and could do well in a forever home with dog-savvy cats. Roo could be a great addition to a family with kids 10 years and older. Roo is still working on his housetraining, but has been doing great about holding it through the night and pottying outside with frequent trips out. His new family will need to be patient with him while he is learning and expect to work with him to help him succeed. Roo has been doing well being left in a pen with his brother while his foster family is away for short periods during the day and overnight. He has never been truly alone, so he will need a family who can slowly acclimate him to being home alone. Roo is such a darling boy, and he can't wait to start his life with his forever family! If you think that might be you, submit an adoption application today! Roo's adoption fee is $350. Apply to adopt here! form.jotform/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (.yolospca) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. For more information about an animal, please email dogsyolospca. For more general questions, please see our website at .yolospca.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
