• Potty training: trained • Fenced yard: no but does need frequent potty breaks • Shared walls: no • People: no young children • Dogs: He needs to be an only dog • Other: visually impairment under assessment. Resource guards spaces. Overview Meet Aspen, a beautiful ~10 year old, 10 lb golden-coated dachshund who proves that love sees beyond physical limitations. Aspen came to Little Paws as a stray found in Miami, but this sweet boy has nothing but affection to give. Despite being somewhat visually impaired due to cataracts, Aspen navigates the world with his heart wide open and is absolutely craving human connection and love. Environment Aspen is a gentle soul who enjoys short walks and playtime. He’s potty trained with regular potty breaks, doing best and a consistent routine. He’s great on the leash and loves his walks. While he’s fine in a crate for short periods and is good in the car when crated, he does bark when left alone and would need a home without shared walls. This love bug just wants to be near his people! Aspen is not a fan of being crated and will whine and bark if left in one. Pets & People Aspen is incredibly sweet with adults and older children, but he wouldn’t suit living with young children as he can be easily startled. He gets along with other dogs of similar size, but is territorial of his space, therefore he would do best as the only dog in the home. Aspen doesn’t like to be moved when he gets comfortable and is exhibiting signs of resource guarding, He will need an adopter familiar with this and be willing to put in the time to work with him. His nature makes him wonderful with patient family members who understand his needs. Due to his vision, he’s very gentle around food and needs to be guided to his food and water bowls, but he manages beautifully once he knows where everything is. Health Aspen has cataracts that cause visual impairment, and he’s having his vision assessed this week to better understand his needs. He sometimes bumps into things and needs gentle guidance to his food and water bowls, but he manages well. He tries to use potty pads but can not always see them. He takes a joint supplement, omega for his skin, and probiotics. His visual challenges don’t slow down his loving spirit one bit. Location Aspen is available for adoption from Miami, FL. Please email siriad81aol with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Aspen is $250.00.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
