● Fenced yard: required or ability to take on walks ● Shared walls ok: yes ● People: older kids+ ● Dogs: her size or larger ● Other: foster-to-adopt while undergoing heartworm treatment Overview Looking for a spirited companion with personality plus? Mini black beauty Gerta might be your perfect match! Gerta is a bright, super interactive almost 4-year-old who weighs in at 17 pounds. She came to Little Paws as an owner surrender and is now ready to find her forever family who can appreciate her endless entertainment value and zest for life. Environment Gerta is a high-energy girl, but while undergoing heartworm treatment and until she tests negative (possibly 4 to 8 more months), she must have limited activity. No long walks, excessive play, etc., as this can be dangerous for a dog undergoing heartworm treatment. Gerta is potty trained; however, you must initiate taking her out. If it's raining, in true doxie fashion, she may prefer to use potty pads indoors. A fenced-in yard would be ideal for her, especially once she completes her heartworm treatment. She's also great on a leash, making those daily adventures a pleasure. She's adaptable to apartment living since she's not too noisy, making her suitable for homes with shared walls but will need to be walked frequently to get her wiggles out. She's uncomplaining about her crate when necessary and is very content when left to her own devices. Pets & People Gerta is initially shy with new people but warms up nicely with proper introductions. She does well with older children on a case-by-case basis, but homes with crawlers and toddlers aren't recommended. With other dogs, she gets along wonderfully with male dogs and larger female dogs, though smaller female dogs are not a good match for her. Around food, Gerta can be a bit snatchy, so careful treat-giving is advised. Her most endearing quirk? She's incredibly demanding for cuddles in the absolute cutest way possible! Health Gerta is currently undergoing treatment for heartworm (slow kill, Advantage multi treatment). The rescue will continue to pay for this treatment until she tests negative. As of July, she is 5 months into treatment, which can take up to a year. However, the treatment could take less time. She would need to test heartworm negative, but still remain on Advantage Multi for a full year under the direction of a veterinarian. For car rides, she does fine on shorter 15-20 minute journeys, but requires anti-nausea medication for longer trips. For this reason, she will need to be adopted within a three-hour drive radius of Forest, VA. Location Gerta is available for adoption from Forest, Virginia. Please email jhcordierhotmail with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Gerta is $375.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
