and is super friendly to everyone and everything, even cats! We haven’t seen him with children, but we think he would be fine. He does like to jump in his excitement, so we need to be careful around small kids or very elderly folks who he might accidentally scratch or knock over. Ozzy’s journey is a testament to his resilience. Rescued from a local shelter, he arrived with extensive mats, fleas, flea scabs, and missing tooth enamel, likely due to a past battle of distemper. Although he carries the shadows of his past, Ozzy is well on the path to healing. Within a month of grooming and love in his foster home, he blossomed into the family dog he always wanted to be. His happy place is climbing into your lap and cuddling with you on the couch. He doesn’t like to spend too much time outside because he doesn’t want to miss a moment of pampered life. Ozzy says that he must have toys in his forever home and that this is non-negotiable. He finds joy in playing with squeaky toys. His forever home also must have another dog that will play and run with him. He finds comfort in their presence and interaction. Without a playful doggy buddy, Ozzy becomes anxious and restless. A lazy senior dog will not do. Ozzy is fully house trained. Because he still has some street-dog habits, he likes to mark new spaces, so we suggest he wear a doggy diaper for the first day in his new home. After the initial day, he doesn’t mark inside. He is leash trained. He rides nicely in a car when he is belted. Without his seatbelt, he climbs all over the vehicle. Ozzy barks a little when he is outside. He loves having lots of freedom of movement indoors and outdoors. He will do best in a home where he does not have to be crated. When he is confined in such a way, he gets anxiety, needs medication, and barks until he is hoarse. He needs lots of open space in his new home. Handsome Ozzy sometimes requires patience with new experiences. In his foster home, he continues growing and taking on new experiences daily. He will require patience from his new family while he initially settles in. Ozzy now searches for his forever family who will continue to support his sweet heart and trusting spirit. SPIN Pyrs are all in foster homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Adoption fees are $300 for dogs under 1 year old, $250 for dogs 1-7 years old, $200 for dogs over 7 years old. Potential adopters are asked to make travel arrangements if they live elsewhere. All SPIN dogs are spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
