ents changing and no longer accepting his breed. While in their care, Koda was described as an outgoing, friendly, and affectionate dog! However, it was noted that Koda does not appreciate (will growl and vacate the area) when small children/toddlers crawl on him/in his space. With that information, we think Koda would do best in a home without children under 5 to help set him up for success. Koda was said to have done well with children 7 years and up! He was also said to do well with other dogs but had no experience with cats, pocket pets, or livestock while in their care. Please ensure you are making appropriate introductions with new animals! Koda was also stated to be housebroken and knows a few basic commands! If you are interested in meeting this big couch potato, please let us know! 05/17/24 This big, cuddlebug is Koda, and he would like to curl up in your lap! Koda was brought to the shelter because he was too big around the small children in the home. Koda was said to do very well with the kids, but, unfortunately, his long tail is right at child-height. He would get so excited and end up whapping the kids in the face or even knocking them over with his tail! Koda was said to love everyone; he gets along with other dogs and even loves cats! In the home he had before his most recent, Koda was said to take advantage of the snow mounds that allowed him to escape the fenced in yard. However, in his most recent home, Koda respected the 4ft chain link fence around the yard (which is a big deal considering how tall he is)! His next home should still consider his previous escape efforts if planning to leave him unattended outside. Koda is said to be outgoing, friendly, and affectionate. He knows some basic commands, such as sit, place and down. He has been known to be rough when playing, and he would occasionally mark in the house. Other than the marking, Koda was said to be housebroken, but he is not kennel trained. He was said to generally mind well and to do well in the car. Koda's previous owners did discover that he is allergic to chicken, so his next owners should be prepared to feed him a novel protein diet. He was said to tolerate beef well, and he LOVES cheese! Koda's previous owner said he will wait to be invited onto the couch, but once he's up there he will want to be in your lap! If you are interested in this big guy, please give the shelter a call!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
