Benji the dachshund might be your perfect match. Benji is an extremely affectionate little guy who is about 5 years old and weighs 9 lbs. With his beautiful golden honey coat and tender personality, he’s a dachshund who lives for love and attention. He was surrendered to Little Paws and is now searching for his forever home—together with his bonded buddy Max. Environment Benji is a high-energy pup who needs daily walks and playtime to stay happy and healthy. He loves his walks and is great on leash, making him a wonderful adventure companion. While he’d enjoy a fenced yard to romp around in, it’s not a dealbreaker. Benji is being potty trained in foster care and is a quick learner. He prefers to stays in a pen rather than a crate when left alone. Benji does have separation anxiety and can’t be left alone for long periods, but the good news is when he’s with Max, they keep each other calm and content. He’s not overly noisy, so he’ll do fine in a home with shared walls. Pets & People Benji is extremely sweet with people and will quickly attach himself to his humans. He loves nothing more than curling up in your lap and falling asleep, and he’ll roll over for belly rubs at every opportunity. He’s very friendly with strangers and gets along well with other dogs too. However, Benji does have some food and toy resource guarding, likely because he appears to have been starved before coming into rescue—he’s quite thin and always hungry. He’ll need to eat separately from other dogs and an adopter should be aware he will eat anything within reach. Benji is completely devoted to Max—he grooms and licks him frequently, seeks his company constantly, and they snuggle together to sleep. They truly are two peas in a pod and must stay together. Health He has a quirk where he cries out when being petted, almost as if he can’t get enough affection—it’s endearing but worth noting! Benji needs physical exercise and mental stimulation. Location Benji is available for adoption from Miami, FL and he did great on a 40-minute car ride, so he’s happy to travel to meet his new family, within reason from South Florida. Please email siriad81aol with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Benji is $375.00.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
