th sweet kisses. Aside from a small amount of hair loss on the tips of both her ears and a scab above her eyebrow, she is in excellent shape after having wandered around on her own for a while. Mindie has settled in nicely in her foster home and has fully integrated with the resident shepherds. However, we are encouraging her to have more downtime than usual, as we want her to heal properly from her spaying last week. Surprisingly for her age, she is good at loose-leash walking and focusing on her person. People fascinate her, and she loves to greet them when they appear friendly during her walks. This little one is also curious about things on the counters, admires her reflection in the mirrors, and enjoys jumping on her people for attention. Although Mindie needs some encouragement to enter her crate, she settles in quickly for naps and sleeps for about 7 hours at night before needing a potty break. Aside from a couple of accidents on her first day, Mindie has learned that going outside is the preferred option for potty breaks, and her foster family is learning her needs and schedule. Agile and sturdy, she likes to walk on benches in her yard and bounce off them while keeping up with her friends. After receiving a few corrections for being rude from the older shepherds, she has adjusted her speed and shows them the respect they require. Her appetite has recently improved, and she is enjoying her meals. Mindie is one of those shepherds who goes potty fairly quickly after eating, making it easy for her when taken to the designated potty area. Currently, she enjoys running with the other dogs while they play, but we expect that in a few days, we will see which toys she gravitates toward. We are happy to have her in our care, where she can be cherished and loved as we get to know her better to help find her the perfect forever family. Have you checked out our YouTube channel? We would greatly appreciate your support by subscribing, liking, and commenting on the videos we share of our adoptable shepherds in action. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and our newest Threads account, where we post plenty of news and updates about our shepherds. As a foster-based rescue, ShepHeroes is always in need of fosters. There are many shepherds in our local shelters who require our help for a fresh start. Would you be willing to open your home and share part of your life to help these dogs find new families? You provide the love, and we will provide everything else! Saying "yes" today truly saves a life. Complete this .shepheroes/foster-form, and we will be in touch as soon as possible. We appreciate your consideration.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
