old and just under 50lbs. She has a bit of a low rider stature and does not look 50lbs. Her build suggests that she may be a terrier/bulldog mix. Sidney is pure sweetness and we don’t think there is a mean bone in her body. She adores people and getting attention and has also been wonderful with the many dogs she has met. Sidney was a mom not too long ago and has been around other dogs in the shelter and in her foster home so we think she would really love a dog pal in her new family. She enjoys romping and running around the yard with the dog friends in her foster home. We don’t have any information on her around cats but she seems to have a temperament where she could learn to live with them nicely. Sidney has been a very good house guest! She is wonderful in the crate and sleeps there quietly all night. She also uses her crate as a quiet place to snooze during the day on her own accord. Sidney hasn’t had any accident in her foster home so far. We think this girl would do fine in a home with or without a fenced yard. She does seem to be a little more of a homebody compared to a big adventurer but that may change as she gains more experience bing out and about. Sidney is really such a love bug and has lots of affection to give. If you are looking for a very friendly dog who would love to cuddle with you and give you kisses this is your girl! There aren’t any kids in her foster home but she was great with kids and Junior volunteers while at the shelter. We think she would be perfectly fine with kiddo siblings. If you think Sidney would be the perfect addition to your family please email us at almosthome4dogsyahoo! (Local adoptions preferred — Philadelphia and tri-state area [South Jersey and northern Delaware] only.) PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTACTING US! We are NOT a shelter: All of our dogs live in private homes with foster families. Come and meet the Almost Home dogs and their fosters at our Meet & Greet events, where you can learn more about our wonderful dogs from the people who live with them, find out which dogs are on their way and when they’ll arrive, and fill out an application to adopt or foster. We cannot adopt to homes where electric-shock fencing systems or training collars are used. For more information on the dangers of electric-shock collars, please visit banshockcollars.ca/studies.php . We do not have an online adoption application; to request an application, e-mail us at AlmostHome4Dogsyahoo. To speed e-mail processing time, be sure to note the name of the dog you are inquiring about in the Subject line. For Meet & Greet times and locations, visit our home page, where you also will find information on our adoption process and fees. FOSTER FAMILIES ARE LIFESAVERS!! Can you open your heart and home for a few weeks to homeless shelter dog? Remember, by fostering a dog, you save TWO lives — that of your foster dog, and that of the dog who takes his place in the shelter! Come to a Meet & Greet and find out if fostering is for you — there's no reward quite like the feeling that you've saved a life ... or two!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
