Meet Wapsi, a beautiful 5-year-old liver & bloodhound with soulful eyes, silky ears, and all the classic wrinkles you’d expect from her noble breed. Weighing around 100 pounds, she’s a gentle powerhouse…affectionate, curious, and deeply loyal to her humans. Wapsi is energetic, food-motivated, and loving, but she also enjoys her independence and doesn’t rely on other animals for companionship. She’s happiest when she’s part of the family routine…following her people from room to room, napping in a cozy bed (or preferably your bed), and joining in for walks that let her famous nose go to work. She’s potty-trained, crate-trained, and house-mannered, though she’s been known to “counter surf” if something tasty is left within reach. She does have the Bloodhound bellowing bark and will alert on wildlife outside the window or a neighbor knocking at your door. Like any true bloodhound, she must stay on leash outdoors — her tracking instincts are strong enough to follow a scent for miles! Wapsi gets along with people of all ages and has successfully lived with other animals, though she can play a little rough if dogs aren’t part of her familiar pack. Wapsi will need to be retrained for proper socialization if going to the dog park as she does not understand her size and weight when engaging with other dogs. We now use the side fenced in area of dog parks for her to run without worry. With patient structure, affection, and the occasional treat, she’ll quickly become someone’s loyal shadow. Wapsi’s ideal home is one that appreciates the quirks of the bloodhound breed — a place where her floppy ears, bellowing bark, and heart-melting expressions will be cherished as much as her devotion. Summary: ï‚· 5 years old, 100 lbs, liver & tan ï‚· Crate & potty trained ï‚· Food motivated and energetic; possessive of toys ï‚· Great with humans of all ages ï‚· Needs leash walks and regular ear/skin care; must stay leashed outdoors ï‚· Loving, expressive, and full of character If you’re looking for a faithful, affectionate companion with a big personality and even bigger heart, Wapsi is ready to make your home hers. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
