gs come and go — and somehow no one has stepped up for this incredibly special boy. It’s truly a mystery. Wilson, affectionately known as Willy, is the kind of dog who quietly steals your heart and never gives it back. This handsome black-and-white Great Dane with his freckled bib and soulful eyes has a way of shifting from adorably serious to playfully goofy in a split second. And then there are the famous “Willie wiggles” — his whole body sways with joy when he’s happy, and it’s enough to brighten even the hardest day. For the past three years, Willy has patiently waited for someone to see past his initial shyness and recognize the gentle, loyal soul underneath. His foster mom lovingly calls him her “baby doll” and “special boy,” and anyone who truly knows him understands why. He is submissive, tender-hearted, and deeply devoted once he trusts you. While he once preferred the company of women, he has grown tremendously in confidence and now relaxes around new people instead of retreating to his crate. He may observe quietly at first, but he wants to be near his people. Wilson’s quirky personality only adds to his charm. He’s a collector at heart — gathering toys, towels, shoes, or anything he considers valuable into his own little treasure pile. Crinkly toys are his absolute favorite and provide endless entertainment. Because of his love of “collecting,” he is crated when unsupervised to prevent any creative redecorating, but his house manners are otherwise wonderful. He is incredibly gentle with toddlers, does well with older, respectful children, and enjoys playing with other dogs. Cats? He happily ignores them, making him an easy addition to a feline-friendly home. He walks beautifully on leash and makes a wonderful walking companion. Car rides aren’t his favorite just yet, but he continues to improve with patience and encouragement. Willy is naturally a bit skittish and sensitive, so he will need a secure six-foot fence to ensure his safety. He thrives in a calm, loving environment where he can continue building confidence at his own pace. After 1,353 days in care, Wilson deserves more than just another tomorrow in rescue. He deserves a family who sees his softness as strength, who celebrates his quirky treasure hunts, and who understands that the best dogs are sometimes the ones who take a little longer to bloom. He has waited long enough. Wilson is ready to bring laughter, loyalty, and unconditional love to the family willing to finally say, “You’re coming home.” ========================= To apply to adopt me, please fill out the application form! form.jotform/51994996709176 Note: Wilson must be adopted locally OR the adopter must be willing to drive to pick him up. He is too skittish to go commercial or be handed off to multiple drivers. For more information, please email us at rescuemesrgdrr. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
