CHER NEEDS A FOSTER HOME!!!! Name: Thatcher Best Guess for Breed: Lab/Hound mix Best Guess for Age: 2 Years as of January 2026 SEX: Male Estimated Weight : 57 lbs as of December 2025 Gets Along With: Other dogs! He has not lived with children or cats, but has spent some time around kids and done well with initial introductions. Currently Living at: DC area foster home. What My Foster Says About Me: If you are looking for a dog who is the perfect combination of fun, active and mellow, then Thatcher is for you! He’s loving, super soft, and filled with energy, cuddles and joy! This cute and silky boy would be the perfect sidekick for someone who enjoys being active, but who also loves snoozing on the couch after a long day. He likes to be in the mix wherever his humans are -- in or out of the house. One of his favorite activities is playing fetch. His retrieving genes are strong! In the house, he likes to be next to us, keeping us company by bringing us his toys or snuggling with us – or even on us! -- as we watch TV. He often naps next to us as we work at our desks. And Thatcher is very food motivated, so he can learn just about anything in no time. He knows how to sit and lie down, but in just one short session, he learned to give his paw to shake and also to spin around. Thatcher is a quick learner because he LOVES food. He sometimes curls up our feet while we’re cooking, just in case we drop anything. He also has learned where we keep his treats in the kitchen and often sits right next to that cabinet, waiting patiently for us to give him another biscuit. We are pretty sure he has the best hearing and sense of smell of any dog in history. He gently takes treats and is very good with our young teenager who likes to wrestle with him. He is good on the leash and enjoys meeting other dogs. Day or night, he is comfortable in his crate. He also does a great job of letting you know that he has to go outside. We have bells hanging from our front doorknob and he nudges them with his nose if he wants to go outside. He also seems to really like car rides and will leap like a gazelle into the back seat. Above all, Thatcher is super loving and loyal! He would be an amazing addition to any family. And, of course, he is eager to have a family who will love him and care for him forever. Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting and transport from the shelter. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
