around 3 yrs old and 70 pounds. She thinks she is a tiny lap dog! She wants to sit on you and give you kisses! She loves her people and wants to be with them as much as she can, including sleeping in the bed with you at night. She is friendly with kids. She tends to jump when she’s excited, so it’s best if her forever home doesn’t have very small children. She is very playful with humans and dogs. She loves a game of fetch in the backyard. She loves romping and trying to get dogs to play with her. She loves toys! She loves her duck toys the best! She will play fetch or just carry them around the house, sometimes she even brings them to bed with her. She is a little bit of a thief! If you leave clothes or shoes on the floor, she will likely find them and take them to the living room. She doesn’t ever do anything with them, but she likes to relocate them for you! Oakley’s ideal family will be active, exercise her a lot, and include her in family outings. She could be a great running buddy for someone! She has a lot of energy and even does well running alongside as you ride your bicycle! She takes plenty of naps throughout the day as well. She would thrive in a home with another playful dog friend. She does great with the male and female dogs in her foster home. We have not noticed any issues with smaller dogs, but because she does like to jump and play hard, her dog housemates should be close to her size or bigger. We feed her separately from other dogs in the house, as we were told she was food aggressive prior to becoming into rescue. However we don't blame her, as her original situation she was extremely neglected, confined, and underweight at only 40 pounds. Likely wouldn't be an issue once she feels safe but we are just taking precaution. She does fine sharing water bowls. She loves walks, and loves to sniff everything, but does get overly excited to see other dogs. She will bark fiercely if they are across the street but is super friendly if she’s allowed to meet them. She doesn’t bark very much otherwise. She is house trained and she loves car rides. She easily goes in her crate when guided. It’s not her favorite place, but she doesn’t put up a fight and settles easily. She has a tiny amount of storm anxiety; she just stays near her humans and is totally fine. Oakley is very smart! Her DNA results revealed that she is 70% Great Pyrenees, 19% Maremma Sheepdog, 2% Australian Cattle Dog, 2% German Shepherd Dog, 2% Chow Chow. She is currently in a foster home in DFW area, Texas. Out of state adopters are responsible for arranging their own transport. Oakley is spayed, up to date on vaccines and heart worm negative. Her adoption fee is $250. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
