as a young pup, she is now 6 years old and back in rescue after her loving owners faced health challenges. She's come a long way from the scared and undersocialized dog we first met. She’s ready for adoption for the right home, but her urgent need is a foster home, where she can decompress, adjust to life in a new place and become part of a new pack. Indie is shy with new people and takes time to warm up around them due to her early life, but as long as you let her settle in at her pace, she warms up, especially with treats. The one exception? The vet. Indie is not a fan of being manhandled by strangers. She is perfectly comfortable wearing a muzzle and needs a handler who knows how to manage vet visits safely. Indie loves to play ball, fetch, show off stuffies, and soak up time with her humans. She’s very goofy and affectionate, and really loves to bond with play. She is a nondominant dog who does well with other large dogs with proper intros. This girl is smart and food-motivated — a perfect partner for someone who wants to continue training or needs a running buddy. Her basic obedience is solid. Indie thrives with bond-based leadership that builds her confidence. She currently walks well in a harness and is comfortable using a properly fitted prong collar if needed. A home that understands working breeds or has experience with fearful dogs will be the best fit. Fun, affectionate, and playful Dog-social with large dogs Needs slow and structured intros to new people/animals/environments Crate-trained and settles well crated when home alone High prey drive — fence required No cats, small dogs, or young kids We are an official 501C3 organization that does not have a physical location. Our home address is in Michigan, however, the majority of our dogs are not located in Michigan. The physical location of each of our dogs is posted with the name of the pet or in the title area. If you are within 4 hours of the pet, please be prepared to pick the pet up. We do provide transport assistance up to 650 miles (325 rescue/325 adopter). Additional miles will need to be covered by the adopter. The information that we have available is in this posting. If you would like to discuss this animal further please fill out this application. Applicants that have completed the application screening process and being considered as a match may speak to the foster home to gain more information about the adoptable dog. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
