A FOREVER HOME!!!! Come meet Lily and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (2/15) from 12-3 pm at the PetSmart in Falls Church (6100 - A Arlington Blvd, Falls Church, VA 22044)! Name: Lily Best Guess for Breed: Lab and border collie mix Best Guess for Age: 11 months as of February 2026 SEX: Female Approximate Weight: 49.2 lbs as of 12/14/25 - she might have a bit more to grow Gets Along With: Other dogs! She lived with kids in her overnight foster and did well. We haven't seen her with cats but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters! Currently Living at: DC area foster home See our sweet and snuggly Lily! Lucky Dog Lily goes on an epic playdate! Special adoption considerations: Lily is nervous in new environments and around new people. She is REQUIRED to a home with a welcoming resident dog who will help show her that the world isn't so scary! Lily is Looking For: Lily is a smart, energetic large-breed puppy who’s still growing into her body (and hasn’t quite realized how big she is yet!). She loves to play, learn, and explore, and she does best when she has a positive outlet for her puppy energy—walks, playtime, training, and enrichment are right up her alley. She’s wonderful with other dogs and does well with kids. Lily truly shines once she feels safe: she’s affectionate, loyal, and deeply devoted to her people. That bond just takes a little time and patience to build—especially with men, as Lily can be shy and nervous at first. With calm, consistent interactions, she warms up and gains confidence. Because Lily is a sensitive, nervous girl who’s still learning that the world isn’t such a scary place, she must go to a home with a friendly, confident resident dog. Having a canine role model helps her feel secure, build confidence, and navigate new experiences with reassurance. Lily is looking for an adopter who understands that love doesn’t have to be rushed—someone patient, kind, and committed to helping her blossom at her own pace. In return, you’ll get a loyal companion who will grow into an incredible dog with the right guidance and support. If you have a welcoming dog and an open heart, Lily may be your perfect match. What My Foster Says About Me: Lily is an intelligent, playful dog and very loving once she feels safe with you. She's great with other dogs and kids but needs extra time and patience to warm up to certain men. Lily is an energetic girl that loves long walks and will be a great running buddy once she's fully grown. She's smart and food motivated, so she could be a great candidate for trick training. She loves to be petted and have snuggles. She's still working on crate training, but has been making great strides! Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken. All of our dogs are working on their crate training. TO ADOPT: The adoption fee for this dog is $460, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations and spay/neuter. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog . 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
