FOREVER HOME!!!! Name: Petey Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd and basset hound mix Best Guess for Age: 7 months as of March2026 SEX: Male Estimated Weight: 36.8 lbs as of 2/8/26 - he is still growing. Gets Along With: Petey loves other dogs and is currently living with a dog and cat in his foster home. We haven't seen him with kids but are happy to discuss integration techniques with interested adopters. Currently Living at: DC area foster home Petey is Looking For: Hi! I'm Petey and I'm looking for a life where I get to play with other dogs and explore and get lots of cuddles. My mama Prim raised me to have good manners but learning is lifelong so I'd like to go to dog school too. Most of all, though, I want to always know where I belong, to be safe and loved for all my days. In exchange, I promise to give you so many adoring gazes and tail wags and so much love and loyal companionship. What do you say? Do I get to grow up with you? What My Foster Says About Me: Petey is the kind of pup who makes you smile without even trying. With his adorable short legs and “low ride” build, he’s basically a little love-bug on wheels. When meeting new people, Petey can be a little reserved at first. He may hang back and let his dog buddies take the lead, quietly taking everything in. But really, he’s just waiting for his people, the ones he feels that special connection with, the ones who will let him move at his own pace and give him the space he needs to fall in love. That’s when the magic happens. A little patience (and maybe a tasty treat or two) works wonders. Treats are absolutely the fastest way to his heart — especially peanut butter! There’s just something extra special about him, the kind of special you can’t quite explain, but you definitely feel when he decides to snuggle up. And once he settles in? Total cuddle bug. Petey has proudly earned top-tier snuggler status and lives for butt scratches, they are his jam. Give him a cozy spot next to you and he’s in heaven. With other dogs, Petey doesn’t know strangers, only friends. He absolutely lights up around his canine pals and loves to play. Being around other dogs gives him an adorable little confidence boost, like he takes one look at them having fun and thinks, “Okay, this place is great!” He doesn’t need another dog to be happy at home, but doggy friends definitely help him feel brave and ready to join the party a little faster. He currently lives with his foster dog brother, and the two of them are morning wrestle-mania champions with bonus zoomies included when you are lucky enough to see how cute he zooms. He’s also sharing his foster home with my cat and is learning that cats are not tiny referees, just chill roommates. I'm pretty sure he thinks having a cat around makes him extra sophisticated. He’s also a smart boy! Petey somehow always knows when food is being prepared and will happily supervise kitchen activities. He’s doing great with potty training and is eager to keep learning. Bonus: he’s recently discovered the joy of fetch and is picking up the “retrieve” part like a pro! If you’re looking for a sweet, tender-hearted boy with the cutest short legs around, and you’re happy to give him the time he needs to blossom into the snuggle bug we know and love, Petey might just be your perfect match. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
