preading love ever since. Even at the shelter, she greeted every visitor at the front of her kennel, quietly hoping for a gentle touch or a kind hand to pet her. That affectionate heart is simply who she is. Truly is about 9 years old and weighs just 10 pounds. She is sight-impaired and likely sees only shadows, but she navigates her world with bravery and trust. She has settled nicely into her foster home in New Jersey. The resident cats are curious about her but still keep a respectful distance. She enjoys being outdoors, lifting her nose to the air or burying it in the grass to explore all the wonderful scents around her. Snow was not impressive in her opinion — she prefers to do her business and head right back inside. Rain? She would rather skip it altogether. Truly enjoys slow, leisurely walks on flat surfaces where she knows she won’t trip. Truly is not a lap dog, but she absolutely loves to snuggle right beside you — preferably under a blanket or two. Butt scratches are one of her favorite things! She bonds very deeply with one special person, though she will happily lie near anyone offering affection. When “her person” enters the room, she makes sure to get up and move closer or follow that person around. She manages stairs well after a short adjustment period. Because she only sees shadows, she may bump into things even after she learns her surroundings. If someone bends over her unexpectedly — especially while wearing dark clothing — she may growl or gently “mouth” out of surprise. She has never bitten or closed her mouth on anyone. Simply speaking to her and letting her know you’re approaching helps her feel safe and relaxed. In her foster home, Truly lives with two cats. In her own way, she has tried to play with them, but they remain a bit cautious—though clearly curious about her. With time and proper introductions, she may be able to coexist peacefully with feline friends. When meeting other dogs, Truly can become excited. She tends to bark, jump around, and sniff as she figures them out, and she is not her usual calm self in those moments. However, her foster has not observed any signs of aggression. Because of this, Truly will need slow, thoughtful introductions to any resident dogs to help her feel comfortable and secure. Truly would love a home where someone works from home or can bring her along during the day. While she can tolerate being alone for reasonable periods, she much prefers the comfort of her people nearby. She does not like being in a crate and would much rather sleep in your bed right beside you. Medically, Truly has been diagnosed with a skin-related autoimmune disease and takes a daily oral medication. She also uses a topical cream on her nose and the pads of her feet. You may notice she has lost most of her claws, which her veterinarian believes is related to the autoimmune condition. She also has luxating patellas in both back legs, which gives her a slightly unusual gait. Additionally, she had two benign mammary tumors removed and now has a clean bill of health. Despite her medical needs, Truly’s spirit is pure love. She is loyal, devoted, and happiest when snuggled close to her person. If you’re looking for a sweet little lady to share your couch, your blankets, and your heart — and to be your absolute best friend — Truly is truly your girl. ❤️

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
