He needs a home where pets respect designated bowls and boundaries during mealtimes and play. Overview Looking for a loyal companion who’s equal parts adventure buddy and couch potato? Gus the dachshund might be your perfect match. Gus is a sweet, cuddly boy who’s about 7 years old and weighs 36 lbs (currently on a weight loss journey). He was surrendered to Little Paws and is ready to find his forever family. This handsome long-haired guy sports a beautiful brown, black, and white coat and has a personality that’ll steal your heart. His foster describes him as one of the easiest fosters they’ve ever had and truly the best boy—even his vet recently praised what a great temperament he has! Environment Gus is a wonderfully balanced boy who loves his daily walks but is equally happy cozying up on the couch or in bed with you (big bonus points if you’ll let him sleep under the covers!). He’s already potty trained and crate trained (though his foster uses a pen), making him an easy addition to most homes. While he’d enjoy having a backyard to explore, it’s not a dealbreaker—he’s adaptable and does well with regular walks and playtime. He’s comfortable in homes with shared walls as he’s not excessively noisy—he barks a little, and really only when he needs something. Gus is great on leash and pays no mind to other people or dogs while out and about. He’s perfectly content being left alone when needed, but his favorite thing is following someone around the house—he just wants to be near his people! This happy boy is always wagging his tail and smiling, ready to be your loyal shadow. Pets & People Gus is a people-loving boy who adores attention from everyone he meets. He’s been around school kids and playgrounds and has done beautifully. While he hasn’t had direct interactions with young children and pets together, he’d likely do fine—though a home with older kids or no kids would be ideal given his food and toy boundaries. Gus gets along wonderfully with other animals, including dogs and cats. He lives harmoniously with a Great Dane at the moment and minds his own business on walks, never barking at or fixating on other dogs. However, Gus does need a home where pets respect personal space during meals and certain play times. He has mild resource guarding around his food bowl and his favorite fox toy, so he thrives in homes where animals have designated bowls and aren’t constantly taking things from each other. He has no interest in bothering other pets if they aren’t bothering him, and he doesn’t go after their things. His foster separates pets during feeding time, and he does completely fine with this routine. Gus has one quirky fear worth mentioning: he’s not a fan of electric scooters. But otherwise, he’s a brave, confident boy who takes new experiences in stride. Health Gus is currently working on becoming a lean ween. He’s on a diet to reach a healthier weight, but otherwise has no medical needs. Location Gus is available for adoption from Charlotte, NC and he’s great in the car, so he’s happy to travel to meet his new family. Please email qwallacelittlepawsdr with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Gus is $325.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
