eed: Pomeranian Mix Age: 4 years old Weight: 10 lbs. House-Trained: Yes (will need to be taken out ever 2-3 hours) Crate-Trained: Yes Good with Dogs: Yes (lives currently with small dogs) Good with Cats: Yes Good with Kids: No (will need an adult only household) Energy Level: Low to medium Fence Required: No Special Note: Ruby has a kneecap that is not at a normal position and is only noticeable when she kicks out her back legs to stretch. She does just fine on it, and does not show any discomfort or pain. She has been checked out by our recue vet and had radiographs taken to determine that since it is not symptomatically bothering her, she will not need surgery or treatment at this time. She will need to take Dasuquin for the rest of her life. About Ruby’s Breed: Our best guess is that Ruby is a Pomeranian (possibly mixed) breed. Pomeranians are tiny dogs with big personalities—confident, alert, and full of charm. They’re known for being affectionate with their people, lively in spirit, and surprisingly bold for their small size. Their fluffy coats and bright expressions match their cheerful, curious nature. An ideal home for a Pomeranian is one that offers companionship, gentle structure, and plenty of attention. They thrive with adults or families who enjoy having a little shadow nearby and can provide regular grooming and mental stimulation. Because they bond closely and can be a bit opinionated, they do best in calm homes where their people appreciate both their sweetness and their spunky streak. All About Ruby: Ruby is the definition of a “people dog.” She adores her person and would happily be held, carried, or cuddled all day long — and she’s small enough that you’ll want to! She’s spunky, bossy, and full of opinions, but also incredibly sweet, alert, and affectionate. With gentle reminders to use her manners, she becomes the most charming little companion! Ruby enjoys her walks, is great on a leash, and doesn’t bark or react to other dogs she passes. She has a medium energy level — not hyper, not sleepy — and spends most of her day lounging beside her foster mom while she works, occasionally getting up to explore the house. She gets along wonderfully with the small dogs and cat in her foster home too! Because she bonds deeply and can be protective of “her person,” Ruby would do best in an adult only, one person household, ideally with someone who has experience redirecting small dog sass. She seems to prefer female energy and thrives with someone who appreciates her adorable yet bold little personality. Ruby is potty trained and crate trained, though she may grumble a bit about going into her crate — but once she’s in, she sleeps peacefully through the night! She also has a mild kneecap quirk that doesn’t cause her pain or affect her mobility, and the rescue vet has confirmed she doesn’t need any treatment at this time. She will need to take Dasuquin for the rest of her life. Ruby is cuddly, quirky, loyal, and full of love — the perfect tiny companion for someone who wants a devoted little shadow with a dash of Pomeranian spice! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
