her adoptive owners' living situation. They felt she would do best in a home where she is the only pet and her owner can be around more. It is important that her next owner understands the level of her anxiety and discusses ways with their vet to help her feel most at ease. She was described as a very loving dog who is a pro cuddler! She was said to do well with children, strangers, and adults. She was also said to do well with other dogs and even livestock. Please ensure you are making appropriate introductions with new animals. However, her surrendering owner did state that she would enjoy being an only pet. River was stated to be housebroken and knows her basic commands. She was said to NOT ride well in a vehicle and her anxiety spikes. Her last owner had spoken with their vet and had her on anxiety meds for car rides. River also has mild allergies and should remain on a limited-ingredient diet. She is truly looking for her unicorn home, and if you feel that could be with you, please let us know! 10/25/25 Miss River is back at the shelter due to her most recent owner having to leave state. We did not receive much information on River this time around, but she has been as sweet and affectionate as ever! She is still spry and playful at 7-years-old, and she has proven that she will escape a playpen if left unsupervised for too long. Make sure River is on a secure tie out or supervised whenever outside. Please continue reading for what past owners have said about River. If you are interested in taking home your very own hippo, give the shelter a call about River! 06/27/24 This sweet girl is River! River was surrendered to the shelter because she was experiencing severe anxiety in her prior home. She was said to love children but would become overly anxious when they were around, leading her to accidentally knock them over and become destructive in trying to get to them. She was also said to start salivating excessively when they were not around. We encourage her next owner to discuss ways to help River with her anxiety in a home setting. She has settled back into her routine nicely at the shelter and has not been exhibiting any of these signs. River may do best in a home without kiddos to reduce her anxiety levels. River was said to do well with other dogs but cannot be trusted around cats. Please ensure you are doing appropriate introductions with all new friends. River was also said to be kennel-trained and housebroken. However, prior to surrendering her, she was said to be having more issues. She has done an excellent job at the shelter keeping her kennel clean and going potty outside! River is looking for an understanding owner who can continue helping her! If you are interested in meeting River, please let us know! 03/13/23 River was surrendered back to the shelter due to her prior owner moving out of state. She was said to be housebroken and to generally mind well! River knows a few commands like sit and shake but would love to learn more (she was described as a super smart dog)! She was also said to be an outgoing, friendly, and affectionate dog who does well with people of all ages and especially loves kids! River was said to have previously done well with other dogs but has no history with cats, pocket pets, or livestock. Please keep in mind that all introductions with new animals should be done in a slow, safe, and controlled environment. If you are interested in meeting this lovely lady please give the shelter a call! 02/27/22 River was surrendered to the shelter because her previous owner had to relocate to a place that does not allow dogs. River is a big sweetheart! She has been nothing but sweet and affectionate with her animal tenders here at the shelter. Her previous owner said she is outgoing and friendly, affectionate and gentle when playing. River is said to be housebroken and kennel trained, and she minds well and rides well in the car. She does need to learn to not jump on people. River is a dog that loves her people deeply. If you are interested in meeting this beautiful girl, please give the shelter a call!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
