Potty training: in progress Fenced yard: preferred but not required Shared walls: suitable People: all ages, best with calmer children Dogs: prefers small/calm dogs (no big dogs) Other: no cats, strong prey drive Overview Looking for a spirited companion who's ready to wag her way into your heart? Ryce Puddin' might be the perfect addition to your family. Ryce Puddin' is a gorgeous long-haired chocolate and tan piebald dapple miniature dachshund who weighs 13 lbs and is about 7 years old. She came to Little Paws when her previous owner had to move to a smaller place and worked long hours—they wanted someone with more time to shower her with the love and attention she deserves. This sweet girl's tail is always wagging, especially when it's time for walks or meals. She's an active, happy little doxie who radiates pure joy at the simple pleasures in life. Environment Ryce Puddin' has a medium activity level and loves her daily walks and playtime. She's working on her potty training and does well going outside, though she still has occasional accidents indoors. She tries to use the pads but hasn't quite mastered them yet. A fenced yard would be wonderful for helping her complete her outdoor potty training journey, though it's not required if you're committed to regular walks. This girl absolutely loves her crate—it's her happy place! She'll go in on her own at bedtime and when you step out. Her previous owner crated her for up to 12 hours, so she's comfortable being alone, though we'd love to see her in a home where someone can spend more time with her. Because she's quite active for her age and loves to jump on and off furniture, she should be crated or in a playpen when left alone to keep her safe. This food-motivated girl loves her meals and treats! At breakfast and dinner, she waits patiently for her bowl with her tail wagging in pure happiness. She's very food motivated, which will make training a breeze, and she takes treats gently without being snatchy—though she'll definitely let you know she'd like more. Ryce Puddin' is a champion walker who loves her leash adventures. She's quiet enough for homes with shared walls and travels well in the car. Pets & People Ryce Puddin' is wonderful with people of all ages and does great with kids—her foster home has two boys aged 8 and 14 whom she adores. That said, she's not a fan of constant running and will bark if children are racing around the house, so she'd be best with calmer kids who can appreciate her sweet nature. When meeting new people, she may bark initially but warms up within minutes once she's had a chance to sniff and get acquainted. With other dogs, Ryce Puddin' has some preferences. She's not a fan of large dogs—she pulls and barks when she sees bigger pups. She does much better with small, calm dogs. In her foster home, she took a little time to warm up to her foster sister (a 12-year-old terrier mix) but now they're good friends who go on walks together. She also loves her tiny dachshund foster sister Izzy, and they sometimes snuggle together. She's been fine with most of the foster home's visiting dogs, though she did grumble at a Pug who got too close. Ryce Puddin' does not like cats and has a strong prey drive, so a cat-free home is a must but in a cat-like twist to her personality: she's not particularly cuddly, she appreciates affection but on her own terms. Location Ryce Puddin' is available for adoption from Miami, FL. She will be spayed and have a dental on 2/20. Please email carena12aol with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Ryce Puddin' is $325.00.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
