a bloodwork check. Her liver values were elevated, possibly from ingesting a toxin. She was put on medication for it but will need her liver values rechecked in a month. 02/06/26 Miss Nelly, previously Yentna, was brought to the shelter due to the cost of veterinary care. Nelly was not eating for several days, so she was seen by our shelter veterinarian and on observation for a few days. Nelly can be a picky eater and may tire of one kind of food after some time. While at the shelter, she has eaten well, so the veterinarian cleared her for adoption! Nelly was described as being a gentle and affectionate girl who generally minds well and does well in the car. She knows some basic commands, such as sit and come. She was said to be kennel trained and housebroken. She was said to do well with other dogs and most humans. She does not have experience with children or cats. Please make sure any and all introductions are done in a slow and controlled and respectful manner. If you are inteerested in meeting Miss Nelly, please give us a call! 04/20/23 These adorable, playful little puppies are ready for their new homes! Yentna came to the shelter with her siblings because their owner was unable to care for them. These puppies have been in a foster home for a couple of weeks so they could grow a bit more before being ready for adoption. They had a great start on socializing and have even been handled daily by the children in the foster's home! The foster family worked very hard on potty pad training the entire litter as well as beginning the basics of teaching `sit` for their treats and appear to be very food motivated making training a breeze. Here is a little bit of information that the foster home gathered about Yentna, or as the foster home had been calling her, `Maple`. `She is not shy and has been the most playful from the start! She is not afraid of other dogs, and just wants to play and have fun. We often find her wresting and having adorable little puppy barking/growling matches with one of her sisters or brothers.` Puppies are a lot of work, they will need consistency, training and patience with their new families. If you are ready to add a puppy to your family and would like to meet with Yentna or one of her siblings, please give the shelter a call to make an appointment to meet them!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
