t visit of all sizes and he is an absolute gentleman with all! He is very friendly and sociable with everyone he meets. His tail is always wagging and he's ready to greet you. He is not dominant with other dogs at all, he is quite tolerant if any bark at him...and chihuahuas do bark at times! He's not much of a barker himself, but he will bark at a total stranger approaching the front door. Volcan has met and interacted with children ranging from 5-16 years old, and has been nothing but gentle and friendly to all. He loves laying his head on your lap for pets, or to bring you a toy. He loves to empty his toy box but has not quite gotten the memo to put the toys back in. :) His only interaction with a cat was to see the one at our Vets office and he showed some interest, but was easily distracted. Training: Volcan is very well behaved in the home, and is only crated at night, which was his choice. His recall is quite good, we do call him Samson, and he comes quite readily to Sam or Sammy. Just a bit easier to say I suppose and he has done very well with it. He is treat motivated so learning commands would not be an issue for Volcan. His housetraining took a while due to all the snow we had, but he is now fully housetrained. He listens very well, and the one time he stood up at the counter got right down when told to. Activity requirements: Volcan does go on daily walks, and does fairly well on the leash. He also loves to run off leash in the fenced in backyard. He would do fine with daily walks, and ideally some kind of fenced in yard to go out and explore, or lay in the sun. He could very well enjoy a dog park to run around in, but doesn't require a dog as a companion at home. He is perfectly content with or without another dog in the home. Fence requirements: We have a 4' fenced in yard and that is fine for him. As mentioned above, he probably would do fine in a dog park, although he has never been to one, there has been no need. A home with some kind of a yard would seem to be best for Volcan, it is fine if there is no fence if there is a plan for daily walks, but an apartment is not a good fit for him. A home with an invisible fence will also be considered for him. Personality: Volcan is sweet, gentle, loving, social, playful at times. He will be right where you are, and will follow you where you go. If you are sitting down, he is laying down right next to you. That is the definition of Volcan. He is a total love, and such a very good boy. Health history: Volcan is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. His next leishmaniasis test is due in November 2026. This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80. Foster comments: Voclan is truly a perfect boy. There are times you forget he's even around he's so calm and quiet. Unless he's laying right by your feet, which is pretty much most of the time. He is tolerant of other dogs, friendly to all he meets, and just wants to lay his head on your lap for pets... although he can also be quite independent when he wants to be. Any time he has been left alone he has been a very good boy, not destructive at all, will be right by the door when we return home laying down patiently waiting. He is very smart and learns quickly. He would do well with most any family environment. Foster location: Yorktown Heights, NY Transport note: We are able to arrange volunteer transport to get dogs from their foster home to their adopter as long as the adopter and the foster are within a 1,000 mile radius of each other and the adopter is located in the USA. If the adopter is more than 1,000 miles from the foster home, adoption would only be possible if the adopter is willing to drive the distance beyond the 1,000-mile transport limit. Long distance adoptions may also be possible if the adopter is willing to pay for a flight for getting their dog from the foster home to their location if the foster feels this is an appropriate arrangement for the specific dog. Canadian adopters would have to drive into the USA to pick up their dog, as we do not transport outside of the USA. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
