: trained (may need pee pads between walks) Fenced yard: no Shared walls: suitable People: adults (not yet tested with children) Dogs: unknown (mixed reactions, meet and greet required if other dogs in home) Other: Overview Looking for a devoted companion who will stick to you like glue and shower you with affection? Toby the black and brown dachshund might be your ultimate velcro dog. Toby is a wonderful 5-year-old purebred dachshund weighing 19.6 lbs. He came to Little Paws when his owner became terminally ill and was unable to continue caring for him. This lovable boy is absolutely everything—his foster parent raves that he's wonderful and very lovable in every way. Toby wants nothing more than to be "stuck" to his person as much as possible. He thrives on love, attention, and being an integral part of your daily life. If you're looking for an independent dog, Toby isn't your guy—but if you want a constant, devoted companion, he's perfect. Environment Toby has high energy and needs daily walks and playtime to stay happy and healthy. He's great on the leash and loves his walking adventures. Though he's trained, he may need pee pads available between walks to accommodate his schedule. His foster family hasn't used a crate with him and doesn't think he would like it at all—he much prefers being close to his people. He's been left alone for an hour or two at a time and has done well, showing that he can handle short periods by himself. Important to note: Toby is a jumper! His new family needs to be alert to this behavior and work with him on it. He's not too noisy, making him suitable for homes with shared walls. He's excellent in the car and travels beautifully. Toby loves to destroy most toys. He's enthusiastic and loves to play, but he's rough on his playthings. Durable toys and supervision during play will be important! Pets & People Toby has been great with all adults he's met so far and has had no problems with strangers. He's friendly, social, and happy to meet new people. His behavior around children hasn't been tested yet, so families with kids should proceed with careful introductions. His relationship with other dogs is still being assessed. He seems to want to approach some dogs but will bark at others, with some eliciting stronger reactions than others. Since there are no other dogs in his foster home, he hasn't been fully tested in a multi-dog environment. Patient introductions and possibly some training would help determine if he'd do well with canine companions. Due to his mixed reactions, a meet and greet will be needed if other dogs will be in the home. Toby has no issues around food and treats—he eats on his own without any possessiveness or anxiety. He's a well-mannered eater who doesn't cause any trouble at mealtime. Health & Special Needs Toby needs to lose some weight to be at his healthiest. At 19.6 lbs, he'd benefit from portion control and his daily exercise routine to reach an ideal weight. Beyond weight management, he's a healthy, active boy ready for his forever home. Location Toby is available for adoption from Bay Harbor Islands, FL. Please email eveassoryahoo with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Toby is $375.00.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
