r Foster - to - Adopt program to give him a try in their own home. Meet Dorito! He is an approximately 2 years old Papillon - Chihuahua mix. Dorito is a small dog with a big heart who came from a situation that wasn’t the kindest start to life. Because of that, he can be a little unsure at first, taking his time to understand that the world can be safe and gentle. Beneath that cautious exterior, though, is a sweet and loyal companion who just wants to feel secure and loved. With a soft voice, a calm environment, and a little patience, Dorito begins to show his true personality—one that’s full of quiet affection, trust and playfulness. He’s looking for someone who can offer him that second chance—a loving, patient home where he can continue to build confidence at his own pace. Dorito doesn’t need perfection; he just needs someone willing to meet him where he is and celebrate the small victories along the way. In the right hands, he’ll blossom into a devoted friend, ready to start his next chapter with someone who sees just how special he really is. This is what the foster mom wrote about him: I’m Dorito. I’m a happy young guy. My foster mom says I am super smart and I learn quickly. My first few years of my life were rough and I didn’t have much human contact. So I am a bit shy at first and am still learning it’s OK to be loved. I smile a lot and want to be wherever my people are. I will happily lie next to you in the kitchen or your office chair; I just want to be near my person. I am not yet a cuddler, but I think I will be soon. I am learning it is nice to be loved on. I am also learning it’s OK to be picked up, but I like to be asked first. I learned quickly to walk on a leash. And I am doing great with potty training. I sleep soundly in my crate through the night. I can spend time in my crate, home alone, without any issues. The crate is one of my safe places. I don’t yet play much with toys because I never had any before. I ride great in the truck and will be a fabulous travel companion. I am an awesome little guy who will bring smiles to your face and love into your heart and home. All dogs are vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered (if they are old enough) before they leave the shelter. If the dog is not old enough, you will be given a voucher for Animal Medical Center in Emmett to cover the cost of the spay or neuter. Please fill out an application if you are interested in this dog or call us today for more information. Because he is in a foster home, please call ahead to schedule a time to meet him. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
