Fenced yard: yes, fenced required Shared walls: suitable People: all (not yet tested with children) Dogs: all Other: Overview Looking for a playful, sweet senior who still has plenty of pep in his step? Willie the red dachshund might be your perfect companion. Willie is a wonderful 10-year-old purebred dachshund with a smooth red coat, weighing 15 lbs. He came to Little Paws after his owner sadly passed away, and now this super sweet boy is ready to bring joy to a new family. Don't let his age fool you—Willie is very playful and loves his toys! He's particularly fond of balls and tugging toys, and he'll happily play with you for as long as you're willing. His foster family describes him as super sweet, and it's easy to see why. Environment Willie has a medium activity level and enjoys short walks and playtime. He's fully potty trained and does great on the leash. He does require a fenced yard where he can safely play and explore. Willie has no need for a crate except for travel purposes. He's very content being left to his own devices and can be alone without any anxiety or issues. He's not too noisy, making him perfectly suitable for homes with shared walls. He rides great in the car and is an excellent travel companion for any adventures or errands. Pets & People Willie is very good with people. He greets anyone happily and is friendly with strangers. His behavior around children hasn't been tested yet, but given his sweet and gentle nature, he'd likely do well with respectful kids. With other dogs, Willie does great! He currently lives with four other dogs in his foster home and gets along wonderfully with all of them. His comfort level around cats is unknown. Willie prefers to eat alone, so he should be fed separately from other pets to give him his space during mealtime. He's not aggressive about it—he just likes his privacy when eating. One wonderful trait: Willie has no prey drive! He's calm and relaxed around small animals and won't chase or get overly excited about critters. Location Willie is available for adoption from Charlotte, NC. Please email luv2ryde88yahoo with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Willie is $325.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
