were a human, he would be the type of guy to introduce himself to everyone at the party with a big hug. His favorite activities include making new friends and playing with his squeaky toys. He would be a wonderful, active companion for someone who wants a dog that they can take anywhere - including outdoor adventures. Mac weighs about 50lbs. He seems like he is pretty much fully grown, but may grow a little more. Mac was found as a stray on a busy street in Modesto. He was brought to the county shelter and ended up on the euthanasia list at no fault of his own. We knew we couldn't let such an amazing dog become the victim of a broken system, and one of our generous foster homes stepped up so we could save his life. Mac has been adjusting well to foster care and can't wait to become your new BFF! Mac is the definition of a big puppy. He is a goofy guy who brings happiness wherever he goes. He loves meeting new friends and is a true social butterfly. He loves playtime and walks and is great at walking on a leash. He definitely is a higher-energy pup and needs a family who can keep up with his zest for life. He would thrive in a home with lots of people to love on him. Mac has been doing very well learning his basic manners, but still needs to continue with his training, and he needs a family dedicated to helping him learn how to be the best boy he can be. Mac did very well with other dogs while at the shelter and was a frequent attendee for play groups. He seems like he could do well as an only dog, or with another playful medium/large dog in his new home. Mac has been respectful of the cats he sees on walks and may do well living with dog-savvy cats after a slow introduction. Mac could be a wonderful addition to a family with older kids. Since he can still sometimes be jumpy/mouthy when excited, he would do best in a home with kids 10 years and older. Mac has been doing very well with his housetraining, but will need to continue with his training in a new home. Mac has been practicing settling in a crate, but is not fully crate-trained. He isn't the biggest fan of being home alone, so he would do best with a family that can slowly acclimate him to being alone and doesn't have to leave him alone often or for long. Mac is such an amazing guy, and he is going to bring so much joy to whoever adopts him. If you think that might be you, submit an application today! Mac's adoption fee is $350. Apply to adopt here! form.jotform/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (.yolospca) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. For more information about an animal, please email dogsyolospca. For more general questions, please see our website at .yolospca.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
