rary Kentucky foster home for keeping him safe and happy until transport. Rocko's owner passed away and family could not keep him. We were told that he is good with other dogs his size and also formerly lived with an older cat. He has been the SWEETEST boy in his temp foster home and has gotten along with all dogs and cats there. He also has done very well with kids and no jumping on them. Rocko is housebroken and he is fully vetted. 4/24 UPDATE.....Hi, my name is Rocko and I am 5 years old but my foster mom says I act younger as I love love LOVE to play with toys, be where the family is at and play/run with other dogs! I do have energy, so my foster mom has been taking me on 2 walks a day to help with this, otherwise I take it out on toys. She says I need tough toys as I love to chew them and play tug of war. I don’t chew on anything else in the house though. I have visited the dogs next door and love running with them in their fenced in yard. My foster mom has a cat, that obviously doesn’t care for me when I try to sniff him, so I leave him alone. I do well in the kennel and dog beds but prefer to sleep with my humans and sit on the couch with them. Foster mom here: Rocko is doing great in our home. He loves to be around people and will follow us from room to room, so we are in sight. He is a grazer when it comes to food but is finally starting to eat 2 meals/day. He is learning to walk well on his leash and sit when we put the prong collar. He loves to drink from water bottles and faucet spigots. He would do well in a home with kids over 6 and another dog as he is always looking to play and interact. However, he is fine being the solo dog as long as there are plenty of toys. He would benefit from a fenced in yard so he can run and get some of his energy out. If you do not have a fenced in yard, several walks are recommended. Overall, he is a great boy who is very smart and learning commands and boundaries already!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
