a number. After being lovingly surrendered to NorthStar when her owner became ill, Lucy has adjusted beautifully and is now ready for a fresh start with a forever family who will adore her as much as she’ll adore them. Don’t let her “senior” status fool you—Lucy is in great health, full of life, and always up for her next adventure. She’s a well-mannered, house-trained girl who listens well and absolutely loves long walks. Whether she’s trotting alongside you or lounging nearby, Lucy is happiest simply being close to her people. Lucy has lived with other dogs, including Lily Nason (also available for adoption), and is currently in a temporary foster home with a Cattle Dog mix. On walks, she may bark at other dogs out of curiosity—think of it as her way of saying, “Hey, friend!” She’s not aggressive, just a little chatty and interested in the world around her. She also has a playful side and enjoys chasing squirrels, deer, and birds. And for those with feline family members, good news—Lucy spent two weeks in a home with a cat and did not bother her at all. In true companion style, Lucy loves her people deeply. She’ll follow you from room to room like your loyal little shadow and greet you with pure excitement (and plenty of kisses!) when you walk through the door. She has been exposed to small children at her foster home and did wonderfully—those little ones were the perfect height for extra doggie smooches! Lucy adjusted to her foster home routine within just a few days and is sure to settle quickly into her forever home. Lucy is crate-trained and will sometimes choose to relax there even when she has free roam, but her favorite place is curled up on your lap—especially if there’s a cozy blanket involved. At bedtime, she loves to snuggle under the covers and sleep soundly through the night like the perfect houseguest. She’s also a great communicator—Lucy will politely stare at you when she needs to go out, and if you miss her cue, she’ll add a gentle bark or two to make sure she’s heard. And if you’re in the kitchen? You’ll have a very attentive (and hopeful!) little “assistant” patiently waiting nearby for a tiny taste. Sweet, gentle, affectionate, and just a little bit silly, Lucy is the perfect blend of calm companion and playful pup. She’s simply looking for a loving home where she can hang her leash, share your couch, and be part of the family. Could Lucy be your perfect match? Don’t miss out on this lovable girl—she’s ready to fill your home with love, laughter, and lots of snuggles. Apply today to meet Lucy at .northstarpets and be sure to ask for her by name. Your new best friend is waiting!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
