A FTA contract is required. spay appt pending Surrendered by her owner to BARC animal shelter to be killed because they didn't want to seek medical care for her after watching her be hit by a car. We immediately pulled this little girl into rescue and a quick trip to the vet with xrays reveals no broken bones. Some minor soreness and a broken heart was all she was suffering with. They said her name was Casanova. We decided she would never hear that name again. Cassie still suffers from emotional trauma. She feels safe in her crate. She seeks it and desires it. She till tolerate love and attention, but is terrified of someone taking her from her crate. She is in the home of an experienced foster who is helping her overcome her PTSD. She still screams occasionally, but recovers once she realizes she's safe. Foster notes: Cassie is a sweet little lady with a big personality and an even bigger heart. She may be a little shy when meeting new people and will sometimes bark or growl at first, but don't let that fool you. That's simply her way of taking her time to get comfortable. Once you've earned her trust, you'll have a loyal little shadow who wants nothing more than to be near her favorite person. Cassie is the definition of a lap dog. She loves curling up beside you, following you from room to room, or relaxing in her favorite cave-style bed where she feels safe and cozy. She enjoys short walks around the house and yard but isn't overly curious or energetic. She's happiest in a calm, predictable environment. She is about 90% potty trained and has excellent bladder control. She much prefers going outside, but when she's adjusting to a new home, she appreciates having a potty pad available in a spot she chooses. Once she picks her spot, she's very consistent about using it. She does best with a routine and positive encouragement. Cassie is fully crate trained, and her crate is one of her favorite places. She happily relaxes there and sees it as her own little safe haven. She has no problem staying home alone and is not destructive. In fact, she's a very easy dog to have around the house. One thing to know about Cassie is that she has a unique, loud attention-seeking cry. It can sound dramatic, almost like a French Bulldog's vocalization, but it usually lasts less than a minute. She only does it occasionally when she sees her person and wants attention. As soon as you acknowledge her, or sometimes even on her own, she'll settle right back down as if nothing happened. She has never been noisy overnight and spends most of her day peacefully relaxing. Cassie would thrive in a quiet home with someone who understands that she needs a little time to settle in. She enjoys the company of small dogs that respect her space but isn't a fan of large dogs or overly energetic pets. She doesn't start fights and gets along fine with cats, but she prefers not to be constantly approached or bothered by other animals. She has mild seasonal allergies that are easily managed with an allergy injection about every six months, helping keep her comfortable. Cassie would make an excellent companion for someone living in an apartment, condo, or other smaller home. She doesn't need a large yard or constant activity. Give her a cozy cave bed, food, water, and someone she can love, and she'll be perfectly content. The perfect family for Cassie is someone patient enough to let her adjust at her own pace and appreciate her charming personality. Once she knows she's safe, she becomes incredibly affectionate, loyal, and loving. If you're looking for a calm companion who enjoys peaceful days, cozy naps, and plenty of lap time, Cassie just might be your perfect match.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
