ome after being briefly adopted and returned when an introduction with another dog in the home did not go well. Mya has been a wonderful house guest so far, and time with other dogs has been limited and controlled. She is very vocal and pushy when playing with other dogs, but she LOVES to play! Mya would do well in a home with other young, large dogs that enjoy playing. Controlled introductions with several time-outs are recommended so that both dogs have positive interactions. Mya does not want to go into a crate, which means that a time-out room would be ideal for her time-outs. Mya is hoping to find an active home that will help her with her greeting and playing manners! It was said that she walks well on a harness! If you’re interested in meeting this affectionate girl, please give the shelter a call! Information from previous shelter stays: 03/12/26 Mya is back at the shelter due her adoptive owner finding that she did not seem comfortable in their home. They stated she did not want to eat while with them and appeared anxious (would chew on her nails). We had our shelter vet assess Mya on her return back to the shelter. We have found Mya to be a picky eater at the shelter. Mya was also described as being very headstrong while in their care. She was said to be housebroken and to know her basic commands. Mya was described as friendly when meeting children but can be a little shy around strangers. We have found that she can be selective towards other female dogs while at the shelter. Please ensure you are making appropriate introductions with all new animals. 02/12/26 Mya was surrendered to the shelter because her owner did not have housing that could accommodate her, and her pet sitter was unable to continue tending to her. The sitter had been watching her for months and stated that she is a fabulous dog, but with their long work hours, they really did not have the time to fully commit to having a dog for the long run. 10/09/24 Miss U’sa is back at the shelter and eager to find her right fit! U’sa was surrendered back to the shelter because her adoptive owners found that she had a high prey drive and they had cats in the home. She would do best in a home without small dogs, cats, or pocket pets to set her up for success! In their home, she did excellent in a kennel and was noted to be housebroken! She also does great on car rides! 08/27/24 This sweet little lady is U’sa! U’sa was said to be 75% Sharpei and 25% Rottweiler. Add that together, and she is 100% wonderful! U’sa was described as a very sweet dog who does well with everyone, including babies and children!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
