rogress Fenced yard: yes, required Shared walls: suitable People: all Dogs: all; benefits from a calm companion Other: flight risk; skin condition being managed, Grade 2 heart murmur does not require medication Overview Meet Pearl, a 6-year-old smooth black pure dachshund who is just now discovering what it means to be a beloved family dog. The whole concept of sofa naps, lap cuddles, and exploring the great outdoors is wonderfully new to her. Watching her figure it all out is, according to her foster, one of the most joy-filled things to witness. At 12 lbs of quiet, gentle sweetness, Pearl is learning to trust, learning to play, and slowly coming out of her shell. Every small step forward is a gift. Environment Pearl is working on her house training and making real progress. She just thrives with a consistent routine. She needs walks of 15 to 30 minutes before she is ready to go, and she is still figuring out that grass is the preferred spot. Patience and predictability will help her flourish. Her crate is her sanctuary. She retreats there to nap, to hide her treats for private snacking later, and to feel safe, so having it accessible with the door open at all times is important. Pearl does not yet have a reliable threshold boundary and can be a flight risk, so a securely fenced yard is a must and doors should be managed carefully. She is quiet and calm indoors, making her perfectly suited to shared-wall living. Pearl is great in the car and travels comfortably in a crate. Pets & People Pearl is shy and gentle when meeting new people, but she is wonderfully sweet once she feels safe. She loves being held and sitting in a lap. She just prefers the person to initiate rather than being scooped up unexpectedly. She rewards patience with deep affection. She lived with other dogs in her home and does well with them. She would especially benefit from a calm, confident canine companion to help show her the ropes of dog life, toys, play, and all the good stuff she is still discovering. Pearl takes treats very gently, hides them in her blanket for later, and eats at her own quiet pace. Health & Special Needs Pearl is currently being bathed every other day with a medicated shampoo to clear up a yeast and bacterial skin infection. She is a great sport about bath time. She also needs a low-carb, low-sugar diet to help keep the yeast in check, and oral medication may be added if needed. The current bath and diet routine is working well, and her new family will simply need to keep up this care regimen while she heals. Location Pearl is available for adoption from Hendersonville, NC. Please email juliejohnsonlittlepawsdr with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Pearl is $375.00.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
