people, but cats are unknown and due to her intersest in critters outside likely not good. All dogs and puppies require supervision and training to be successful. Sheva is a playful, curious girl with a big love for toys and a growing sense of adventure. As she settles into her home, she's becoming braver and more confident each day, happily exploring her surroundings and showing off her sweet, fun personality. If you are looking for a dog who is equal parts fun-loving companion and dedicated couch potato, Sheva is your girl! This gorgeous girl is ready to find her ultimate forever kingdom. Sheva is a beautiful soul who forms incredibly deep, loyal bonds with her trusted people. She is an absolute cuddle bug who loves to show affection. When she isn't lounging around the house, she transforms into a total goofball—it is "freaking adorable" to watch her carry her favorite plush toys around and initiate gentle wrestle sessions with the resident dog. Sheva's Highlights: Perfect Mix: She has the calm, majestic, watchful nature of a Great Pyrenees paired with the soft, toy-loving playfulness of a Golden Retriever. Leash Manners: No pulling here! Sheva has excellent leash manners and loves going on peaceful neighborhood walks. Great dog 'sister': Sheva is a "dog's dog" who thrives with canine company. She plays beautifully and safely with the foster's gentler, medium-sized dog and loves having a buddy to lounge with in the yard. She had done great with all the dogs she has met at events too. House Manners: Sheva is past the acute puppy stage so is very easy in the house. She has had no accidents. She was crated initially but 'graduated' to being baby-gated in a spare bedroom when no one was present for short periods of time. The retriever in her likes to 'collect' things like shoes and socks, which she puts in an area she designated. Therefore, she is limited to the spare bedroom when the foster is gone to prevent her from looking for collectibles. Sheva's Ideal Forever Home Because Sheva is a true Livestock Guardian Breed mix, she possesses a natural instinct to watch over her "pack". To set her up for a lifetime of success, her ideal home looks like this: Household Structure: Sheva would absolutely flourish as the solo companion to a single owner or in a multi-adult household with experience. In a single-person home her loyalty becomes a beautiful gift. In an experienced multi-adult household she will fit in seamlessly as the 'pack protector'. With her size she may knock over small children, but has been good with the kids she has met. Because she is young and smart, she needs physical and mental stimulation. The ideal home will offer lots of exercise/mental stimulation. She has had mainly short durations when she is left alone and room to play. The Yard: A secure yard with a physical fence is ideal. Sheva loves to be outside, patrolling her perimeter for squirrels, playing with her toys and lounging in the sun. Dog Friendly: She would love a home with a laid-back, confident, but non-dominant dog who matches her love for backyard wrestling and sunshine lounging. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
