a little shy when meeting new people, she warms up quickly and becomes a loyal friend. She is doing very well with her foster sister, and has taken many of her cues from the resident dog. Apple enjoys canine companionship and would likely do well either as an only dog with attentive owners or in a home with another friendly dog. Environment Apple is making wonderful progress with housetraining. She has learned to ring a bell to let her foster family know she wants to go outside—although sometimes she rings it just for the opportunity to chase birds! She does best on a consistent schedule and remains accident-free when taken out regularly throughout the day. Apple generally needs about 4–5 potty breaks daily. One thing to know: she is not a fan of going out in heavy rain and may try to wait for better weather! Apple is doing very well on leash walks. She is not reactive and enjoys calmly exploring her surroundings. She is especially interested in greeting people and investigating everyone's ankles along the way. A fenced yard where she can safely explore would be a wonderful bonus, but she is also enjoying daily walks and outdoor adventures. Apple is smart, food-motivated, and eager to learn. She picks up new routines quickly and has already made tremendous progress with potty training and household manners. She is relatively quiet overall and generally only barks when startled or when someone approaches the home. Apple's biggest work-in-progress is crate time. She is comfortable resting in her crate when people are home and the door is open, but she becomes vocal when crated after her family leaves. Interestingly, her foster family has noticed that she appears much calmer when left out of the crate for short periods, suggesting that her distress may be related more to the crate itself than true separation anxiety. Apple would thrive in a home where her family is around frequently and willing to continue helping her build confidence with alone time. Apple currently displays some resource guarding behaviors around food, chews, and occasionally toys with other dogs. Because of this, she is fed separately in her crate and does best when high-value items are managed appropriately. She has never shown aggression toward people, and her foster family has successfully managed this behavior through separate feeding routines. Her ideal family should be aware of these tendencies and continue providing structure and supervision around meals and special treats. Apple would love a home where she can be part of the family and receive plenty of affection and attention. She would do well with adopters who appreciate a dog that wants to be involved in everything they do. Whether as an only dog or with a compatible canine companion, Apple is looking for a family that will continue her training, provide a predictable routine, and give her all the cuddles she craves. Pets & People New People: Apple may bark once or twice when visitors arrive, but she settles quickly and is eager to make new friends. Children: While her foster family has not personally observed her around children, her previous owners reported that she did well with kids. Given her gentle nature and affectionate personality, she is expected to do well in a family setting with proper introductions. Dogs: Apple enjoys being around other dogs and is very friendly. She walks nicely around other dogs and people and has not shown reactivity on walks. Cats & Small Animals: Apple previously lived with four cats and is currently coexisting peacefully with a resident rabbit, suggesting she may do well in homes with other small pets. Location Apple is available for adoption from Nutley, NJ. Please e-mail jemmaallennygmail with questions, or submit an application at the button above. The adoption fee for Apple is $600. Note: Apple has not yet been spayed as her foster family's vet is backed up until August. Because of this she will come home to her new family on a "foster to adopt" contract. Her new family will schedule her spay with their vet, Little Paws will cover the cost, and after she gets the ok at her follow up appointment the adoption contract can be finalized.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
