• Potty training: pee pads • Fenced yard: not required • Shared walls: suitable • People: all, including respectful children • Dogs: all • Other: has dry eye and arthritis; mostly blind Overview Meet Cooper, a 12-year-old black-and-tan smooth coat dachshund with the sweetest, most easygoing soul you could hope to find. He weighs about 12 lbs and carries himself with the gentle, unhurried ease of a dog who has decided that life is good and people are wonderful. Cooper came to Little Paws after being rescued from a high-kill shelter in Georgia, where he ended up through no fault of his own. He has some age-related health needs, but none of that dims his light one bit. His tail wags a mile a minute when you find him and scoop him up, and that kind of joy is infectious. Environment Cooper is a true couch potato and perfectly happy to spend his days close to his people, pottering around at his own gentle pace. He does not need a yard and is well suited to apartment or shared-wall living. He uses pee pads reliably and is good for a little while on his own, making him a flexible and easy housemate. He loves walks and is enthusiastic about getting out, though his training on leash is still developing. Short, relaxed outings suit him well. He travels happily in the car. Pets & People Cooper is great with everyone. He has no reservations about people, gets along beautifully with other dogs (he is gentle and submissive by nature), and would be fine with respectful children. He is a gentle eater and poses no concerns around food or treats. He is, in a word, a love bug. He gets so excited to be picked up and held, and will make whoever adopts him feel like the most important person in the world. Health & Special Needs Cooper has dry eye in both eyes, which is managed easily with eye ointment applied two to three times a day. He also has some arthritis typical of his age. He is very good for his medications and makes the whole routine simple. Due to his age, he has limited vision. His one quirk is that he sometimes walks in circles, which is worth being aware of but does not affect his quality of life or his cheerful outlook on the world. Location Cooper is available for adoption from Mint Hill, NC Please email juliejohnsonlittlepawsdr with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Cooper is $150.00.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
