adorable, polka-dotted little bundle of fun is estimated to be around 2-3 years old, and can't wait to be your new best friend. He has a big plumy tail that he wags all the time, and a cute overbite like Geena Davis. Petey is a petite guy and weighs about 11lbs. Petey was found as a stray with a fractured leg and was brought to a local shelter. We were able to work together with the UC Davis Fracture Program to get surgery to fix his leg. After some crate rest and TLC in a foster home, h e’s all healed now and ready to find his fur-ever home! Petey is a high-energy guy who is looking for an active family that can keep up with his ever-curious mind and busy body. He loves hanging out in the yard playing with toys, and snoozing in the shade or in a doghouse when he’s ready to take a break. He is an affectionate and fun guy who bonds strongly with his people and is happiest when he can join you for whatever the day brings. He loves going for walks, and with his energetic nature, he can go block after block without getting tired. He would be a great hiking buddy for someone looking for a compact adventure buddy. Petey loves other dogs and has been doing well living with other small dogs. He can be a little much for low-energy or shy dogs, so he would do best with other active dogs who can match his energetic play style. We haven't seen Petey around cats, but he may do well with dog-savvy cats who can hold their own with a playful dog. Petey hasn't been around kids, but he may do well with kids 10 years old and older. Petey is house and crate trained. He quietly sleeps overnight in his crate and is content to hang out in there while his foster mom is gone for short periods during the day. Petey has a voice and isn't afraid to use it when he is excited, so he wouldn't be a good fit to live in an apartment. Little Petey has lots of love and energy to share with a forever family - are you that family? If so, submit an application today! Petey's adoption fee is $400. Apply to adopt here! form.jotform/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (.yolospca) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. For more information about an animal, please email dogsyolospca. For more general questions, please see our website at .yolospca.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
