Pomeranian Dogs For Adoption in Arlington, VA, USA

Dog Breed: Pomeranian (long coat). Meet Stewart! Stewart's story began when he was found wandering as a stray. He wasn't microchipped or neutered, and despite efforts to locate his

owner, no one came forward to claim him. Their loss is definitely someone else's gain because Stewart is an absolutely adorable little dog with a big personality and an even bigger heart. Since entering foster care, Stewart has acclimated beautifully to home life. He lives with his foster mom, Debbie, and her two resident dogs, and he integrated into the pack with ease. While he was a little annoying to the other dogs before being neutered, that behavior has already improved significantly. He gets along well with his canine housemates but isn't dependent on them for companionship, which means he'd be happy as either an only dog or in a home with another friendly pup. Stewart has also met the resident cat and done very well. He's curious but respectful and has shown no interest in chasing. Personality-wise, Stewart is a confident little guy with plenty of charm. Like many small dogs, he can have moments of frantic "little dog energy" before quickly settling down and returning to his calm, relaxed self. He's also an excellent watchdog. If he hears a noise outside or someone arrives at the door, he'll be the first to sound the alarm. Once he's made his announcement, though, he's usually happy to go back to whatever he was doing. Underneath that confident exterior is an incredibly sweet and cuddly dog. If you pick him up, he melts into your arms and becomes completely relaxed. His foster mom says this is when he's at his absolute cutest—like a little teddy bear who just wants to be held. Stewart has good house manners and is both crate-trained and housetrained. Like many unneutered male dogs, he marked when he first arrived, but since his neuter, that behavior has improved considerably. He reliably asks to go outside, sleeps quietly through the night in his crate, and has adapted well to household routines. He's also a pleasure to walk. Stewart does well on leash, whether walking with other dogs or on his own, and has shown no leash reactivity. He enjoys exploring the neighborhood and taking in all the sights and smells. When visitors arrive, Stewart may announce their presence with a few barks, but he warms up quickly and is more than happy to soak up attention from new people. His barking is generally focused on alerting his family to noises and activity around the home rather than any true concern about strangers. If you're looking for a confident, affectionate, entertaining little companion who can make you laugh one minute and cuddle up beside you the next, Stewart may be the perfect match. His foster mom gives his cuteness a perfect 10 out of 10, and we're inclined to agree. Stewart will be coming to DC metro in early July. Apply today! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
