oves to go on walks, and explore. She is looking for a family that is up for a whirlwind adventure. Energy Level? High House-trained? We are working on it Describe how they are on leash? She is learning leash manners and catching on Describe how they are with other dogs? Good with other dogs overall. She may be shy when meeting new dogs, but once she's comfortable, she enjoys playing. She can be protective of her food, so meals should be fed separately. She may also show reactivity when confined in her crate, but this typically subsides once she's out and has a chance to interact appropriately. Have they been around cats or other animals? How were they? Limited exposure to cats so far, but she has done well with the interactions she's had. Based on her temperament, we think she may do well in a home with cats, but slow, supervised introductions are recommended. Commands they know? She is learning to take treats gently and is making good progress. She hasn't mastered any basic cues and would benefit from positive reinforcement training. What are their favorite things? Dottie loves to play, eat, enjoy treats, snuggle, and explore. She also loves her toys and is always happy to entertain herself with a favorite toy. What do they need to work on? She will benefit from basic training to help her greet people politely without jumping, wait patiently instead of barking for treats or food, and finish her potty training. She also needs to learn that she doesn't need to guard or worry about sharing her food and toys. With consistency, positive reinforcement, and a little patience, Dottie has all the makings of a wonderful companion. How are they when left alone? How long have they been left alone? Dottie has been left a full workday with the resident dog and access through the doggie door, which she learned on the first day. Where do they sleep? Dottie is crate trained; however, she has been sleeping in an xpen. What is their ideal home? Dottie would do best with another playful dog who can match her energy and enjoy romping around with her. She is a very smart girl who will thrive with basic training and is likely to learn quickly. She will benefit from a family that is committed to working with her to help her feel safe and understand that no one is going to take her resources away, and who is up for puppy-proofing and working on mouthy puppy behaviors so they don't become lasting habits. Dottie is an active dog who would enjoy daily walks, playtime, and a securely fenced yard where she can run and explore. She is incredibly sweet and affectionate, has so much love to give, and will make an amazing companion. The Adoption fee is $325. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
