y that will keep you smiling. It took him about a week to settle into his foster home, but once he realized he was safe, he truly blossomed. Now he greets his people at the door with the cutest happy howl—and it has quickly become one of their favorite things about him. Eeyore has a medium to medium-high energy level. He loves to play, run around the yard, go for walks, and explore, but once he's had an opportunity to burn off some energy, he's perfectly happy to settle down and relax with his family. He's also full of little quirks that make him Eeyore. Before every meal, he does an adorable twirl in circles, his happy howls announce when he's particularly excited, and he's always finding new ways to make his foster family laugh. Eeyore is still young and discovering the world, so occasionally something unfamiliar will make him nervous. With calm reassurance, however, his curiosity usually takes over. He's incredibly smart, learns quickly, and looks to his people for guidance when he's unsure. Life at Home Eeyore is doing great with his house training. Like any young dog, consistency with his routine is important, but he understands what is expected of him and continues to do very well. He has even learned to use bells at the door to communicate when he needs to go outside. He is also crate trained, although if Eeyore gets to cast a vote on sleeping arrangements, he's choosing the bed every time. He would much rather snuggle up somewhere comfortable near his people, but he can use a crate when needed. His leash manners are still developing. Eeyore loves exploring and sometimes thinks investigating everything around him is far more interesting than walking politely beside you. Continued practice and consistency will help this smart boy keep improving. Car rides are another area where he's building confidence. They can still make him nervous, so short, positive trips and patience will help him learn that getting in the car can lead to good things. Other Dogs Eeyore can be nervous around other dogs, particularly when he isn't sure what to expect. He may become overly excited or uncertain when seeing another dog, but he is responsive to his handler and can be redirected. With proper, slow introductions, we believe Eeyore could successfully live with another dog. A calm, well-socialized canine companion and a family willing to manage introductions appropriately could be a great match for him. He has not been tested with cats. Kids and People People are where Eeyore really shines. He currently lives with teenagers ages 14, 16, and 17 and absolutely adores them. He has never met a stranger and seems to operate under the assumption that every new person is simply a friend he hasn't met yet. We believe he would do best with children around 12 years and older, primarily because he is a young, playful, energetic dog who will appreciate kids who can comfortably keep up with him. And if you're looking for a guard dog, Eeyore probably isn't applying for the position. He is much more interested in making friends. One Important Eeyore Fact: He Loves to Chew Socks. Shoes. Bras. Random personal belongings that absolutely were not intended to become dog toys. If Eeyore can reach it, there's a chance he'll consider whether it might make a good chew toy. Providing plenty of appropriate toys and keeping tempting belongings picked up will go a long way toward setting him up for success. He's young, smart, and still learning what belongs to him and what definitely does not. Eeyore's Perfect Home Eeyore would thrive with an active family that enjoys walks, hikes, jogging, playing outside, or simply including their dog in everyday adventures. He doesn't need to be entertained every second of the day, but he does need a healthy outlet for his energy. Most importantly, he needs a family committed to continuing his training and giving him consistency. Eeyore is intelligent, affectionate, hilarious, and eager to learn. He has already made tremendous progress in foster care, and with patience, structure, and plenty of love, he's only going to keep getting better. He may need a little reassurance when the world feels unfamiliar. He may steal a sock if you leave one unattended. And given the opportunity, he is absolutely going to choose your bed over his crate. But he'll also greet you with happy howls, make you laugh with his pre-dinner twirls, follow you on adventures, and remind you every day just how much personality can fit inside one dog. If you're looking for a sweet, smart, wonderfully goofy companion to grow with, Eeyore—aka Jabarkus—might just be your guy. =============================================================================== To apply to adopt me, please fill out the application form! form.jotform/51994996709176 . 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
