tching her blossom has been the sweetest thing. Miri is a beautiful 2 year old, 58 pound Black Lab who came to us from the heartbreaking Saunders County hoarding and neglect case. She was one of the 28 Labs rescued, but initially went to one of our wonderful rescue partners with a physical shelter. Unfortunately, the shelter environment was just too overwhelming for this sensitive girl and she wasn’t thriving, so she transferred back to us to experience life in a foster home instead. It has made all the difference. Miri is still a timid girl, but every single day she makes some progress. She is incredibly sweet, gentle, and submissive. She loves curling up beside her foster family in bed or sinking into a cozy dog bed for a nap. She is slowly showing us she feels safe and content now. She adores other dogs and really needs a confident, friendly resident dog or two to help show her that the world isn’t so scary. She loves running around the backyard and playing with her canine friends. Cats don’t bother her one bit, and she’s good with kids, although a home with very young children who are constantly on the go may be a little overwhelming while she continues to build her confidence. Miri is now housebroken and has earned complete freedom in her foster home. She doesn’t need a crate and does great when left loose. The biggest hurdles she’s still working through are leashes and car rides. Both are still unfamiliar and scary for her, so she’ll need an adopter who understands that healing isn’t always a straight line and is willing to let her move at her own pace. She will continue to get there. A secure fenced in yard will be required for her. The perfect home for Miri is one filled with patience, kindness, and unconditional love. She may not be the dog who greets you with zoomies on day one, but if you give her the time she deserves, you’ll have the incredible privilege of watching a once forgotten dog blossom into the incredible companion she was meant to be. Miri is spayed, fully vetted, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, on preventatives, microchipped, and ready for her happy ever after. Her adoption donation is $400. Please apply directly on our website on the dropdown menu at havenanimalrescuenebraska PLEASE SUBMIT AN APPLICATION AT: havenanimalrescuenebraska/adoption-application We do not have a facility. All of our animals are spayed/neutered, examined by a vet, up-to-date on vaccinations, on heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchipped. We adopt our animals as strictly inside companion pets. We will do a veterinarian reference check and a home safety check. We are located in Omaha, NE and we do not ship our animals. We are all volunteers so please be patient with us. Our requested adoption fees help go towards medical expenses, food, transportation, toys, and other supplies for our animals. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
