afe and wonderful place. Dallas was rescued by a Good Samaritan after surviving on his own for months. When he was found, his skin was in terrible condition, but with love and care, his fur is beginning to grow back and he is looking more handsome every day. Dallas can be a little fearful of new people, new things, and unfamiliar situations. On walks, new experiences can scare him enough that he wants to turn around and head back home. But once he realizes he is safe, his sweet personality shines through. He is incredibly loving, eager to please, and very treat-motivated. Give him a few treats and some patience, and he quickly learns that people can be kind. We like to say Dallas is a little like the Cowardly Lion—he has a huge heart, but he needs a patient family to help him find his courage. Dallas is: Potty trained Loving and affectionate Eager to please and quick to learn A professional furniture lounger A big fan of belly rubs A talented counter surfer—so keep those snacks out of reach! In need of a secure fenced yard Dallas has met with our trainer, who has given his foster family helpful tips and guidance for building his confidence and helping him work through his fears. He has not yet been tested with dogs or cats. Since unfamiliar things on walks currently make him nervous, we want to give him time to build confidence before introducing him to other animals. Dallas is heartworm positive, so he cannot be neutered until he completes his heartworm treatment. The rescue will cover all medical expenses related to his heartworm treatment and neuter. Because Dallas is a large, strong boy and we don't have a history of him living with children, we are looking for an adult-only home where he can continue gaining confidence at his own pace. Dallas doesn't need someone to expect him to be fearless overnight. He needs someone willing to show him, one little step at a time, that the world isn't so scary after all Give this sweet boy some patience, a few treats, a safe yard, and lots of love—and you just might watch his inner lion emerge. Dallas is ready to find the person who will help him discover just how wonderful life can be.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
