? Bonsai was rescued from an overburdened and overcrowded animal control facility in rural Kentucky with four littermates, where they faced an uncertain future. Nothing but brighter days ahead now for Miss Bonsai! She is currently being loved and cared for by a doting foster pawrent in Chicago as she patiently waits for her happily-ever-after. At 7 months of age, she tips the scales at just over 50 pounds of adorable, lanky puppy. A DNA test completed by a littlermate indicates her breed mix is 51% German Shepherd, 32% Doberman, and smaller percentages of Australian Shepherd, Great Pyrenees and Chihuahua. Bonsai inherited the best breed attributes of Shepherds and Dobermans and will make a phenomenal addition to an active and engaging household. Bonsai can be a little bashful when meeting new people but is quickly won over with some kind words and a few gentle pats. She is a tender, affectionate, loving, and sensitive soul who loves people and other dogs, playing with her toys, hanging out with her canine foster siblings, and cuddling on the couch with her people. She bonds deeply with her humans, and you will not find a more loyal or devoted companion than Bonsai. She's doing very well with housetraining in her foster home, quickly adjusted to her foster family's schedule, and is crate trained. As a young dog with no prior training, any potential adopters should be prepared to continue reinforcing her housebreaking by keeping her on a consistent schedule and to provide some basic training (sit, stay, down, etc.) and the structure, guidance, and love all young pups need to blossom into the best canine citizens they can be as adult dogs. Bonsai's extremely food-motivated, intelligent, and eager to please, so teaching her the basics should be a breeze. There is no doubt she will make one lucky household very happy. Bonsai is excited to meet you; submit your application today! Bonsai is vaccinated, microchipped, spayed, and started on monthly flea & heartworm preventatives. Her adoption fee to the rescue is $475. She is being fostered on Chicago's North Side, and meetings are arranged by appointment once an application has been submitted and is approved for adoption. For more info or an application, please email palsplace1hotmail or visit palsplacerescue. Unfortunately, we cannot place holds on our dogs for any reason. Please do not submit an adoption application unless you are ready to meet and welcome a dog into your home within three days of applying. Adoption applications and correspondence from the rescue may end up in your spam or junk folder. If you are waiting for our reply, please check those folders regularly. If it has been 48 hours without a reply, please follow up with an email to ensure your application was received. • Bonsai's adoption fee is $475. This fee helps to cover any necessary medical care to prepare her for adoption. Pal's Place relies solely on adoption fees and donations to care for the animals in our rescue. Please check your spam/junk folder; sometimes, the applications end up there! We are a volunteer-run organization and do our best to respond to all inquiries within 24-48 hours. • All of our dogs are in foster homes and can be seen BY APPOINTMENT ONLY after an approved application has been received. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
