Our sweet little Camilla has had such a difficult life. She was found wandering stray in traffic, brought to the shelter and into a foster home with another rescue, and then while in the foster home was attacked by a much larger dog and suffered severe eye injuries. We stepped in to help, and both eyes had to be removed. She also went through a spay surgery, a dental, had three benign masses removed, and is now recovering nicely in a loving foster home in New England.
And Camilla, in spite of everything she's been through, has a sweet, loving, easy-going temperament. She's quiet, gets along beautifully with other dogs, and doesn't have a mean or aggressive bone in her body. And Camilla appears to be 100% house trained! She has not had an accident since she came into foster care. She may be a little hard of hearing in addition to her blindness, but we've treated all other health issues and other than some thinning fur, she is healthy.
I do have to say that I've had many, many blind dogs as fosters, and Camilla is among the lowest functioning. She has been with me almost a week and still hasn't made much progress in terms of learning the layout of the house. She needs to be carried to find the water bowl or to go in and out of the house. She's not capable of doing even a single step in spite of my efforts to teach her. She doesn't seem to have much natural curiosity, and spends a lot of time sleeping in a comfortable position. She does not seem distressed or frightened, just content to sit and rest and wait for me to take care of her! It's not that she's a difficult dog, in fact she's quite easy, she just needs a little more help than other dogs.
Camilla would be a great addition to someone's lap! She loves attention, affection, hugs and kisses, and is a total love bug. Anyone who's had a blind dog can tell you that they really are amazing. After they get to know the lay of the land they do just fine. Please don't let Camilla's blindness be a roadblock to her finding a loving forever home.
